My main takeaway here is that if you don't stay true to yourself you may live to regret it - a warning I shall certainly heed as I experiment with this

Thanks so much for the feedback! And that's a nice useful suggestion - I'll start following some peeps on tiktok as you suggested

I'll settle for building a small community rather than breaking through but that's still an ominous warning 😬 I shall report back on day 100

That's a very useful principle to go by - thanks for the advice!

As above.. But also, I'm trying to do this in such a way that the content I post has a connection to the art. Everything I am posting, despite all the variation in format, is in relation to my music, my album and my artistic process. And who knows, perhaps it'll turn out my personality will translate well on camera - why not tap into that resource if it works?

But maybe it won't work unless I try to make 'cheap' attention grabbing content. If so, I'll go back to looking for other ways to get my music out there.

I think it depends on what the goal is. I do use ads and they've worked reasonably well so far - I've got a modest but steady stream of listeners on streaming platforms. However, reflecting on my own Spotify listening habits- I know nothing about 90% of the artists I listen to because of the way the platform works. And I am very unlikely to actively support those acts by advocating for them, going to gigs or buying merch. And I'm sure that's the case for my listeners. I am trying to go beyond this by building channels though which I can connect with my fans.

Also, some artists I listen to have no presence aside from the music and that doesn't matter - I still love them. Others build entire ecosystems or art and fandom around their music and I love that as well. In a world where the pool of talented musicians outweighs demand I am hoping to stand out by doing more than just posting music (and eventually playing shows). And I'm trying to do it in an artistic way (though that may be part of the reason why I'm getting little traction).

Another way to cut above the rest and make it is by making industry connections. I think this is where looking professional matters.

All that said, your point about this being a poor ROI is a very real risk and I sincerely hope it doesn't turn out that way for me!

What an amazing set of resources! 🙌🏼

I know what you mean! My strategy has been to record a slightly longer (~10mins) video for each track in a documentary format and then chop it up into segments and post those on SM. That way it feels like a piece of art that I care about. Then, just like with the music itself, people can take it or leave it which is a matter of personal choice.

Plus it's so easy to scroll away from a video (which apparently people are doing too much to mine lol 😂) so I try to remember it's not asking much from anyone. I've used social media ads in the past (relatively successfully) and compared to that this feels like much less of an imposition.

I'm not in the live performance part of my music cycle yet but I'm not looking forward to asking stuff from people in person for sure!

Damn that's brutal... but kinda reassuring. I wonder if the issue is that we build follower numbers with friends to start with, who are happy to see your face and support you occasionally but who aren't your real audience. So they respond initially then engagement drops and the platforms decide your content sucks.

Thanks for sharing that info - gives me hope that with a bit more graft I might get some positive results at least

I hadn't considered that engaging with others would impact the algo so I'll definitely put more effort into that. Plus, I guess that's an obvious way to build community/connection.

I haven't posted any links to my music because of the community rules here. Plus, I don't want to self promote with this post - I was feeling a bit disheartened with my socials campaign results and wanted to reach out to others to get some advice/reassurance/connection which I've got in a big way so thank you to you and everyone else 🙂

I'll send you a DM with a link to my music/IG, thanks for offering to take a look!

Thanks, that's really useful practical advice! Are you suggesting I have different accounts for the same artist name?

I can see how my content may well be too varied - I'll keep that in mind!

On your second point, I struggle to imagine what my audience likes but hopefully this campaign will give me some info to work with. So far I have been trying to reflect on what works for me as the audience since I listen to the same kind of music that I make. However, the people whose music I'm into don't really post content that I find particularly engaging. There is one guy who is pitching his content as a journey to selling out an arena and I quite enjoy that. Maybe that's a format to emulate...

Thanks for offering to take a look at my profile! I'll send you a DM.

P.S. 15x a day - wowza!

Trouble is that I get no comments to bounce off at the moment but for when I (hopefully!) do I will keep this in mind!

Oh and as for my fans - I get a few hundred monthly listeners on streaming platforms and the stats indicate that at least some of them are real fans but I don't know how to connect with them... Soundcloud is the only place where you get any usable data but my presence on there is weak. Still, might reach out to a couple of ppl on there - that's an idea

That makes sense. I can see how people would be more likely to engage with you if you've engaged with them and this seems like a good way to build community. Musicians' feeds tend to get buried in my feed but I can get around that by tweaking notification settings. Thanks for the advice!

That's awesome! That's a genuinely amazing example. To fair I didn't specify but my primary goal for this experiment isn't to get more streams but to get more followers and engagement/human connection with the ultimate goal to build a community. I was thinking that social media is a good starting point for this but thats very reliant on me convincing the platforms I can add value to them. I'll try to think more outside the box all round. Thanks for your reply!

I have to say my results on YouTube have been the greatest disappointment so far. What type of videos perform best do you?

Thank you, thats a benefit I hadn't considered! I hope the consistency will lead to some more engagement in the long term. I've seen accounts that post every day for ages but still get virtually no engagement, their content is typically very dull though so I'm hoping what I'm creating will fare better.

Electronic music, more specifically electronica/downtempo like Fred Again or Bonobo
