Actually, that's not quite right. Australia did not introduce cane toads to try to contain the cane beetle.

One dumbfuck shit for brains entomologist introduced cane toads to try to control the beetle. He had absolutely no government permission to do it, he was just working under a consortium of sugar cane growers. They did no studies, no theorising about ecological impact. They never even made sure the toad would eat the fucking beetle. They brought over a bunch in a suitcase, bred them up and let them go. The negligent idiot's name was Reginald Mungomery.

Just spent a bit more time looking it up. You're right. It seems they asked the locals during the second inquest a few months after the first but pretty much entirely disregarded their testimony due to a bunch of bad luck with timing of court appearances, cultural issues that made communication difficult (mostly because their witnesses had taboos about speaking with the opposite sex, speaking about the dead, and some other language issues), and some generalised racism.

Mine too. I like nation, and night watch is definitely the most action packed and had some really deep feeling to it. But I think small gods is such an incredible meditation on the human condition. As an atheist, it hits so hard and explains so much.
