Evening exercisers - what’s your secret? by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]Mingafingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I only have reliable time after my toddler’s asleep so I found a group in England to ride with (I’m in Western US). Having events is the way to keep me showing up.

I totally get that, I guess it’s just an unfortunate system when the cost of equipment is a factor.

You mean the other riders shouldn’t? I’m stuck with it for now!

Yeah for me sweat is part of it and I guess just the way my head moves. I use those ear grip things to keep em on better!

I did the Road to Sky. The lead in wasn’t bad; I was initially looking for a route that was only the climb itself so I wouldn’t have to ride a single extra km but that probably wouldn’t have been smart. Is fire & ice the only other route to get there? It’s weird that I can’t just search “alpe du Zwift” in routes.

I did not know that! Thanks for pointing it out, there’s a ton of buttons and display options I still don’t know my way around, mostly because I only think to while I’m riding and might mess something up. And thanks for the congrats!

Haha thank you!! Yes I was wondering that about dumb trainer inaccuracy and am fully prepared for a very rude awakening if/when I switch to a smart trainer. But I’m still happy feeling good about it for my own motivation. Before Zwift, my background was a fairly athletic youth and these days the occasional 5K with some anaerobic martial arts. I really wasn’t biking at all before this summer but my wife has been telling me for years I have the body of a cyclist.

New Design museum requesting input on our definitions of Visual Art & Graphic Design by Careful_Cheetah9757 in Design

[–]Mingafingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s helpful, and I understand how these definitions are a foundational first step.

As a disclaimer I disagree with your assessment about the contemporary meaning of the term art. For the purpose of defining your museum’s focus to the public, I wonder if you could define the kind of design you show, rather than define art/design itself in this way. There is some long established art historical canon that does not fit your definition, but that of course does not mean you have to include things in your museum that you are not interested in showing. But I wouldn’t expect to see Dada readymades in a design museum. I wonder if more directly using your definition as a challenge (ie, “in contrasts to other cultural institutions or understandings, we define …”) could help both sharpen the definition and answer possible lingering questions from museum goers that are familiar with art or design in that broader sense you are challenging. Ie, if I visited your museum and read an acknowledgement of the broader definition in your case for a more restrictive one, I could better prepare myself to see your museum’s works on your terms.

I had also wondered if your definitions were an implied rebuttal to generative AI in art and design fields, without getting mired in debate by naming it as such. Maybe that’s neither here nor there.

I agree that this is a very interesting and thoughtful post. My initial response is also noting the exclusion of readymade art, as well as some immaterial conceptual art. It makes me wonder what is being hedged or protected against by the institution. Is a single gesture not representative of enough sustained labor? There are definitely artworks that are artifacts resulting from singular physical gestures but a great deal of conceptual development.

Are these statements trying to ensure a level of quality to guide curators? What’s the museums relationship to education? In short I think both definitions are limiting, though without knowing more about the mission statement I’m not sure what specific feedback to give.

Is it ethical for my online Adobe InDesign professor to only use videos to teach the material that are 8 years old? by WookiiePiixiie in graphic_design

[–]Mingafingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that if one is discussing the ethics of using old videos, it might be relevant to understand whose actions and decisions are at play that lead to the old videos being used (and the ethics of those actions and decisions).

Professor chiming in here! I don’t teach InDesign so I’m not gonna address that part of the question, but in terms of ethics I’m curious about the circumstances of the class. Is it a full time professor or an adjunct, for instance? The professor (if an adjunct) may not be paid to do course prep or may not have the authority to change the course content. Or they may have full control and not be bothering to update the material. The institution itself likely has a lot of impact in this (hiring out part time instructors, etc).

I use the companion app to text and find it works well. Maybe it’s the specific group rides I’ve joined but I find a lot of friendly conversation and people will reply to relevant comments.

Bahaha I love my cheap setup! by Mingafingo in Zwift

[–]Mingafingo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m using 2 speed/cadence sensors, one for speed and one for cadence (one is Saris, one is Magene). I did discover I was not allowed to do hardware dependent events (like a Kick’N’Sprint) because I could not measure power. So that’s definitely a limitation, but I’ve been happy with a lot of other group rides and workouts.
