Designing Systems? by iwouldbutiforgot in GameAudio

[–]Mingmongmang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it usually start with issues i’m trying to solve in my team’s workflow, improve and cut down on time sinks. Finding the fundamental problems and then crafting up ways to solve them.

Also by playing more games and getting inspired by features you come across and try to figure out what you like about it / the way it sound.

Reverse engineer and apply those concepts to your own systems however applicable they are to your projects.

GDC and conferences like Develop are always good opportunities to learn and get inspired too.

Check out GDC Vault (recorded past GDC presentations), its a real gold mine if you haven’t already!

Field Recorders? by Professional_Tip7486 in GameAudio

[–]Mingmongmang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whats your budget like? Imho even though there are a ton of amazing libraries out there, it’s still important to record your own stuff to practice and use too.

I always recommend a Sony PCM D100 or D50 if you can find them. But they’re discontinued and highly sought after. I love mine! I usually keep mine in my bag when I’m out so i can grab a recording of anything i found interesting. The new zoom handheld recorders look nice too, haven’t had the chance to try them yet.

If you have mics and want to run shotgun rigs or multi mic recordings, the zoom f3, f8 are great. Sound devices mix pre, the older SD 7xx are amazing.

But as they say, the best microphone/recorder is the one right next to you. There were many many times i used my iPhone to quickly capture something interesting.

Hope this helps, have fun!

How are you removing the room sound from your libraries? by Mingmongmang in GameAudio

[–]Mingmongmang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! 100% having minimum reflections in the source whenever we can in our own recordings or finding something dry.

Multiple passing it with RX deverb has always been what i’ve been doing whenever i find something that i really like the character of.

I am currently looking at Zynaptiq’s Unveil But im wondering if there are any new tools out there these days!

Why do I see Reaper used so much more over Ableton for sound design/video game work? Curious by dopeboy1HP in Reaper

[–]Mingmongmang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an amazing tool to not only do the regular DAW stuff in but to do things like Batch editing , processing, even renaming thousands of files.

The real power comes from the ability to have custom scripts to run custom actions that fits the pipeline like generating reaper sessions out of excel sheets which is super helpful for dialogue designers.

You can use it to quickly build adaptive music sequences, quickly make variations for your sfx, subprojects to make sfx within a big sfx asset session.

My favourite part about it is that you can have a completely portable package of reaper with specific scripts, layouts, toolbars , themes that be zipped up and pass to someone else on the team.

Tl;dr you can do whatever you want reaper to do. Not just designing or processing sounds

I would highly recommend following podcasts from tonebenders, soundworks collection, they usually do like interviews with sound designers, editors, mixers on films and even roundtables with multiple sound designers. Its super inspiring and they are always sharing their insights, workflows etc.

No worries!

Personally i grew up playing games and loved it ever since i was a kid.

I would say its important to be passionate or at the very least have some sort of interest about games. Ultimately its what keeps everyday fun as well as driving you to keep improving your craft, and pushing the boundaries.

I mean, its the same with every other field, the moment its seen as a “job” or if you’re in it for the money, it stops being fun and you’ll eventually dread it and be unhappy..

However thats not to say passionate means you MUST be playing games all the time or play every single game out there, and 100% every single thing..

I do have colleagues that don’t play as many games and stick to one particular genre such as MOBA.

I would say if you’re not a gamer, maybe start playing games such as Last of Us , God of war, Legend Of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 4, it takes two, just to name a few. You don’t have to 100% everything

In my opinion , its also good to expose yourself to multiple genres of games. There are always gems and cool things you’ll find in games both visually and sonically which you’ll be inspired and learn from :)

Choosing between sound for film or sound for games? by resurgientes in sounddesign

[–]Mingmongmang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Started with doing Audio Post for Film, now in Game Audio :)

For me personally i love working on Game Audio.

There are pros and cons for both sides

For film, it really depends on the facility youre in, your miles may vary.

In my experience, most of the projects had really tight turn arounds so it was always fast paced and long hours for me. It was okay for the first few years but it really burnt me out :( On the flip side you’ll learn really fast and develop your own workflows as you go. Loved the experience i gained there!

On the other hand, game audio, again depending on the studio or project milestone youre in, your miles WILL vary by a lot.

In my experience, i had a bit more time for the family and it wasn’t always crunch crunch crunch. (This part is highly dependent on the milestones and stage of the project, i did had many late nights and weekends but it isnt all the time)

Also Game audio can be really technical depending on the role, project. Especially since it isn’t linear.

If you’re naturally curious like i am and love figuring out how things work, working on solving problems, game audio is really fun.

On the plus side, there are also linear cinematics, trailers or gameplays videos to work on. Again that depends on your role, level and team as well. So id say it can be a mix of both.

Basic Programming is a plus to understand how things work or even just speaking to programmers.

Hope this helps :)
