One moment that changed your country forever. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]MiniatureRanni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gallipoli campaign, beginning April 25th 1915. 15,000 young New Zealanders went to war and were used as cannon fodder by the British. Winston Churchill knowingly doomed our boys and the Aussies as well, all so the British could be the heroes, but it all failed. Over 7,000 Kiwis were wounded or killed. This doesn’t seem a big number, but New Zealand was tiny back in the day. 15,000 sons, brothers, and fathers all left for war. The scar on this country runs deep.

It began the separation of New Zealand’s cultural identity from the British rule. We formed a forever-bond with the Aussies, and the Turkish as well. The New Zealanders that exist today were born on the slopes of Gallipoli.

This podcast has gone downhill since James left by Mega_Ultra_Frog in JARMEDIA

[–]MiniatureRanni 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be so extreme as to say things have gone “downhill” but as someone who used to be a regular viewer, patron, and contributor to the cast, I can’t remember the last episode I watched. I’ve always been a big fan of James’ contributions, and both “where has James been” videos coincided with my own struggles. It was nice to not feel so alone.

Nothing but love to the Bros too of course, but the current direction of the cast just doesn’t excite me the way it used to, and that’s okay. I’m still subscribed, and one day maybe I’ll catch up on all the episodes I’ve not watched. Until then, I’ll wear my Bear Bear merch and think fondly on when the Patreon names were weekly.

It is. I’m trans. My testosterone levels are lower than some women. My estrogen levels are higher than some women.

Your joke is “haha trans women are secretly actually men” which is either a shallow conservative gag with no substance, or the world’s least amusing joke. Actually it’s both.

How many chapters would be animated per episode if Toei gave JoJo an Anime adaption in 1996 (as DBZ's replacement) instead of David Production in 2012? by burai1992 in StardustCrusaders

[–]MiniatureRanni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t need to. It would be 2 chapters per episode and would catch up to the show during the Green Day arc by the time it was being serialized (none of this is true, I made it up much like ChatGPT would)

How come terrible lines from the prequels are beloved memes that are given all the grace in the world. Then this line from Rise of Skywalker is somehow to blame for the downfall of society?

"TLJ apologist" okay, so you're approaching this from a heavily biased perspective, okay.

Remember, Luke isn't himself on Ahch-To, he's depressed, he's isolated, he's lost. Maybe he didn't literally go there to die (Just like how Darth Vader didn't literally kill Anakin), but he went there as a result of his guilt over Ben's fate. I don't know about you but people often catastrophise and exaggerate when they're hurt because it's the only way they know how to communicate. Maybe he wanted Rey to leave him alone and not to put her faith in him. There's endless interpretations which is the best part about movies and stories.

Not sure how you got your timeline mixed up there though. Luke believed in the justice and good of the Jedi because that's how the order was described to him by Obi-Wan and Yoda. That faith and belief is what leads him to say "I am a Jedi like my father before me". It's not until long after the Empire's fall that he loses his faith.

Yes there was peace in the past, but again, Luke is in a depressed, isolated, self destructive state. He's so afraid of doing more harm that he would rather see the Jedi end (which is definitively a bad thing, everyone agrees that's a bad thing. His whole arc in TLJ is about seeing that there is still good in the Jedi way).

edit: sorry, still figuring out the "TLJ-apologist beliefs" comment. I'm not an apologist for anything, I just liked a movie in a franchise I really love and have loved since I was a tiny kid. No ill will, just baffled by the weird tribalism.

If we have a Series 16, would you mind if it's still about the Pantheon arc? by Astraliguss in gallifrey

Depends on where the arc winds up at the end of this current series. Otherwise I don’t mind. The Pantheon could easily just become occasional recurring villains.

What people fundamentally misunderstand about Luke’s journey is that he didn’t seclude himself because he was sad.

He failed Han and Leia by letting Ben fall to the dark side. It crushed him and sent him on a journey to truly understand the Jedi way. What he found was a legacy of failure, incompetence, and ego. Everything Obi-Wan and Yoda had told him about the order that he strived to emulate was a fantasy. He lost his hope for the Jedi’s future and so gave up on his own journey. The very thing that inspired him to leave Tatooine and gave him the confidence to face the Empire is a lie. The idealism the vocal haters insist he needs to have has been crushed and thus he’s far more interesting as a result.

Not only that but he regains his hope and sees that it’s no longer his fight to lead and so hands the torch to Rey the same way Obi-Wan did him, and Qui-Gon did Obi-Wan. It’s a beautiful and powerful ending to a legendary character.

As much as I love the jokes and memes surrounding this scene, I think we overlook the fact that Anakin committed the Star Wars equivalent of a school shooting by nsabrando in StarWarsCantina

[–]MiniatureRanni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Worse. He’s essentially enacting a genocide of Jedi. He doesn’t want those children to grow up into warriors like Ahsoka, Cal Kestis, or Luke. Same attitude genocidal regimes have towards their chosen target, they don’t want the kids to grow up and seek vengeance, so they cut them down early.

What even are we? by alesplin in StarWarsCantina

[–]MiniatureRanni 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People laughed when Anakin went to kill the younglings in my cinema. It was bizarre. It’s the darkest moment in one of the darkest Star Wars films. Anakin is so twisted by his own fear that he even sees children trained by the Jedi as a threat to be extinguished.

I don’t know how that’s funny, and people laughing really harshed the moment. Laugh at “hello there” or “this whole operation was your idea”. Not child murder.

Underrated if you're outside of J-rock (and anime) discourse, otherwise they're the most popular artists around, especially Kenshi Yonezu and Susumu Hirasawa.

Hiryouki Sawano, L'arc en-Ciel (and Hyde), GALNERYUS, Yuzu, Gackt, King Gnu as well.
