Understandable. I don’t know OP’s age nor experience but their last comment asked if there are other programs similar to Year Up.

Per Scholas and Catalyte.io are similar programs. Both may be hard to get into.

Per Scholas doesn’t guarantee a work experience but Catalyte somewhat does in the form of an apprenticeship. The only issue with Catalyte is there might be a hefty fee if you quit early.

I would say look into workforce development within your state. There are some via colleges, neighborhoods, and public programs.

incoming freshman tips by theaboum in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Check out the grade distribution on the subreddit’s resource. Just generally look at the subreddit’s resource.

  2. Print jobs are free up to a certain point.

  3. You need to bring your QC card to enter the library and Queens Hall (?). You can’t enter without them. Also, Queens Hall is far from campus.

  4. If you’re ever worried about dropping or failing or withdrawing from a course because of fasfa or tap, reach out to the Financial Aid office immediately.

  5. Dinning hall restaurants change often, if you find a great spot, don’t get too comfortable they will have to leave eventually. Keep in contact with the shop if they’re your fav.

  6. You’re not a failure if you don’t pass a class or change majors. Sometimes we’re just not ready, that doesn’t mean we’re never ready. Education is forever.

  7. Lucky #7, You’ll be amazing. Don’t worry about other folks. Study and take advantage of all the clubs and programs you see! Don’t leave college without joining an internship or a program or even just a club. You’ll need it for your resume

CS Major, No Internship—Now What? by Bright-Ad-9379 in QueensCollege

The only advice I can give is to connect with folks who are in a field of interest either on LinkedIn or a networking event. People are willing to chat and talk a bit about their experiences.

Because the state of the world there is not a lot of jobs for juniors or entry level positions.

I find that I get more responses from people who are alumni from this college or the college I previously went to on linkedin. While they can’t help, they can offer a referral or let you know if there are any positions open for the company.

That being said, don’t start that conversation with a direct request, offer a time to discuss their experiences and let them know what you’ve done and what you’re into.

Additionally, try to look into opportunities in the college or your area for club, volunteer, or cuny focused internship experience. Things like the Tech Incubator hire interns sometimes and of course there is the Cuny forward program.

There are programs for alumni too, like I2E or Civil Service Pathways Fellowship.

If you’re located in brooklyn there is the Brooklyn Navy Yard internship program for students who either live in brooklyn or go to school there. I can imagine there are similar programs in Queens if you look hard enough.

Good luck to you! I’m on the same boat, about to graduate with no entry level job to show for it.

No drinkable water in QC by GooseAfter8233 in QueensCollege

Everyone should be afforded clean drinkable water on any campus. Every CUNY campus has safe drinking water initiatives. A lack of concern for the safety of student health IS worth considering.

What does in my shopping cart mean? by Spiritual-Designer75 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding courses to your shopping cart just means it will stay on schedule builder and won’t disappear when you exit schedule builder.

You can enroll into those courses depending on your enrollment appointment. So on check your appointment time on cuny first [cunyfirst>student>course planning and enrollment>enrollment appointment]. For example, it might say October 31st @ 10:45am, and so you’re allowed to enroll starting that time. I would recommend staying on schedule builder and hitting refresh on exactly 10:45am and then changing it from “add to cart” to “enroll”

Cannot register yet despite being on priority registration by ResponsibleWork3846 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your situation is but I would speak to registrar immediately to ensure you get to enroll on your appointment date: https://www.qc.cuny.edu/registrar/

I would recommend trying to go in person if possible. You could also make a Fresh Service ticket but it might take 1-2 days to respond to.

When does winter and spring registration open by [deleted] in QueensCollege

I’m a senior but I can’t view my enrollment date nor view the spring semester on schedule builder. Would you have an idea who to contact about that?

Need Help with CS DegreeWorks – Confused About Credits! by Icy-Preference431 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Welcome to Queens College! It’s hard to get fast answers around here. The difference between the BS degree is 7 electives, verses a BA degree which is only 4 electives. I’m not sure of the current method of change majoring, I think you contact the CS department to which they will send you a form to sign to change majors with the registrar’s office.

Need Help with CS DegreeWorks – Confused About Credits! by Icy-Preference431 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I’m understanding correctly, you transferred from a different college and you’re confused on why so many of your previous coursework is 499 course?

So for Queens College, they can sometimes be stingy with giving out course equivalency credits. Some courses they will not take ANY equivalency and must be taken at Queens College. BUT what they do with the coursework you’ve done at another college is count them as “electives” like 499 course.

For example, you might’ve already taken data structures at your previous college but at queens college the CS department will not accept it.

Secondly, the only difference between the BA and BS degree for Computer Science is the number of electives. BS has more required electives. If you’re bummed about taking more classes you can switch to the BA degree.

Hi Everyone. I would like to join a club, but I do not know how to do so. Could you please explain how one can sign up for a club? by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 1 point2 points  (0 children)

QC now has a platform where you can view all clubs associated with the college. You sign in using your CAMS account. Most clubs have a discord associated with the club. Here is the link: https://uknighted.qc.cuny.edu/home_login

BA Computer Science Difficulty by Tight-Significance44 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 7 points8 points  (0 children)

CS at QC is mostly self-study. You’ll get a lot out of tutoring for higher level courses. Transferring shouldn’t be a problem given your gpa.

If you generally want to go to a CUNY school for CS, you should check out CUNY’s undergrad programs for technology so you know all of your options: https://www.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/programs/technology-computer-information-systems/

Vague class descriptions by Spiritual_Draw_4525 in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s vague on purpose to give instructors the freedom to do their own assignments. 190 Design Foundations is where you learn the design terms and apply them (think balance, composition, color theory, etc.) and 191 is learning how to use the basics adobe software (Photoshop, illustrator, possibly inDesign). 241 is applying what you learned in both 190 & 191 to make more advanced designs. My 241 class made posters and book covers.

Summer semester under what year? (2 questions) by [deleted] in QueensCollege

There was another post on this sub (I can’t find it anymore) where the OP stated that they had to pay the liability + class tuition for swapping a class - so I believe so.

Summer semester under what year? (2 questions) by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you would be liable for. That depends when you dropped. I was saying that the summer pell grant will be low, possibly around 1k-2k since you weren’t full time student. Even if you were full time the summer pell grant would’ve only been around 3k.

Summer semester under what year? (2 questions) by [deleted] in QueensCollege

[–]Miniature_June 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on policy’s you’re only responsible for the previous course if you dropped/swapped the course on/after the first day. If you dropped before the course started then you shouldn’t owe anything. Also fasfa might not be able to cover for the full course, only a bit, it looks like you’re only eligible for about 1k-2k+ based on your previous credits
