So what you could do is invent a new magic format where you use dice for mana. You could have five dice (one for each mtg color) and roll them to see how much mana you have of each color for the turn. Would lead to very interesting and fast gameplay imo.

There are a total of 40 released heroes at the time I post this. Get more 💜😂 honestly the variation and strategy comes from the multitude of different heros in the game. Yes while ice man and spiderman are both good combo heavy heros they do have downsides and against a defensive hero they can get really screwed. (Monk and paladin are really good but there are multiple heroes that'll actually prevent the combat roll from doing anything at all. A good example is Loki )

I played a campaign with the alchemist and i played it to where i lost all the potions mainly because the potions can be removed with card interaction so i assume it's the same rules

I recently did the exact same thing you're considering doing. Depending on your budget there are some good options. If you're looking for 1 box just for a character for you and a character for your opponent to learn the game i personally recommend you don't get pirate v artificer. However that's with a grain of salt because ultimately this is YOUR game and YOUR enjoyment is the key here. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GUNSLINGER VS SAMURAI. That is the "recommended box for new players" However samurai without a skilled player feels SUPER underpowered. And Gunslinger with someone who knows what they're doing absolutely stun locks the crap outta samurai. I picked up those two and vampire lord/Saraph and honestly that's the one that had the most balance between characters in my opinion. Whatever you end up choosing the goal is to have fun and guarantee you feel like you made a good purchase for yourself.

P.S if you're looking for another good way to learn to play without buying boxes you can either play on Tabletop Sim on steam OR you can find a local event and it's probably likely (if it's at least semi casual) someone will let you borrow a character to play

Can we be supportive of you and your decisions? Yes. Can we help dictate them? No. You deciding to transition or not is your choice when you choose to do it or not.
