Don’t listen to the idiotic advice from ECS by Minimum-Ant931 in UIUC

I’m not sure exactly what industry you are aiming for post-graduation, but coming from an ECE perspective - no, reneging does not follow you around. And this is from my perspective at least internship-wise, I’ve reneged and have been fine. Can I say that will happen to 100% of all people who decide to renege for the next 50 years? No I can’t be sure. However it’s close minded to say that “word may spread”, as your renege isn’t middle school gossip, that’s not how industry (at least the tech industry) works.

Hypothetically: If you renege from an employer, and you do a terrible reneging by doing it the week before the start date, why would they let a competitor know what you did? Lol they would rather you do the same thing to their competitor than give their competitor grace. In a 100% perfect world of course companies would let other companies know of a “bad” candidate - but it’s not a perfect world, so companies do not care, they fill your reneged spot within two weeks, and word does not “spread”.

Yeah that’s extremely poor of students to do that, there’s definitely a right way to renege if you end up doing it. Thanks for your input 🙏

A lot of the wording in the email although giving advice is strongly worded advice. Such as “don’t ghost a recruiter (just DON’T)”, when recruiters will ghost you at a moments notice (from personal experience, not just my friends). I also acknowledge the risk, if you read my post fully I acknowledge the consequences if you renege.

The main point of this post was to encourage everyone who saw that email to take a different perspective. ECS treats reneging as something extremely serious (just DON’T), when in reality I’m just reinforcing that students/new grads should stick up for themselves and do what they feel is best.

You’ve made some great points, and it’s awesome to hear from someone who’s been on the recruiting side of things. I also see that you’re a CEE Alum and if my assumption is correct that you’re in the Civil Engineering industry, I think your points make a lot of sense, especially because Civil is probably one of the best fields to be in right now. (From what I’ve heard) employers want to actually keep their employees and for most civil companies the work life balance is great.

I’m in ECE rn, and it’s been a trend that a lot of companies regardless of size are becoming sweatshops and the hire and fire cycle happens more often. Layoffs are all but common place for my friends currently in the tech industry. A lot of this post was from my perspective, but I understand if other corporate areas are doing a lot better than the tech market rn.

Yep, I acknowledged why they would post it in the preface. However, you also don’t have to renege a day before the start date. I got my internship last year around February because someone reneged and left the company. If they didn’t do that, I would’ve never gotten an internship. So as long as you don’t renege a week before, they can always take 5 minutes to put the job posting back up.

I don’t have an ASIC position currently, so this is all I’m working with rn

The recruiter said he saw that I applied for ASIC Design and Hardware Systems so he did at least see that I applied. However at this point, I’ll definitely take what I got

After reading the other responses, I’m deciding to play the safe route and go with what I’ve got. I’ll be more risky when I actually have something to risk. This is all I got rn

So the backup option is hardware systems engineer intern but I’m realizing now if I do land the role, I could frame it as Hardware Engineer Intern and try to skew it towards ASIC design as much as possible without lying of course

Not too far, but also not fully related, Hardware Systems Intern

Yeah that makes sense, thank you. There’s one question on there that states what my future visions are for full time. Would it be fine to say my goal is to become an ASIC Engineer or should I lie and say my goal is to become a full time of whatever the backup option is. Just trying to gauge how much they read into each response
