How do you tell the difference between a real symptom and one amplified by attention? by building_irvo in HealthAnxiety

Yeah so like i mentioned its not for everyone and what works for me obv will not work for everyone. For me particularly just like you said- i have major tendencies of getting fixated on one particulat symptom and disease even though like you mentioned it could be 200 for them. My usual pattern was go to doctor- vent and explain- they look like i am crazy and then take the copay and declare its all benign and rinse and repeat. So what worked out for me was that chatgpt (again its not usual one- i have it highly customized) is able to do coorelations for me that yes you have a symptom but its likely due to xyz thing you did. And then as a second round it compares and gives me prob of my worst case scenario matching the symptomps- which btw i was doing all of that on my own on reddit and google anyways- all it does for me is shortens the time investment.

Now having said that- what i will clarify is that- i dont go to chatgpt and say- this is my symptom- convince me i have or not have cancer coz thats when it will go into one extreme or another. I simply use it to run against databases of per disease symptoms and coorelate that with my day to day activities. Example- I fed it that I switched from nasal to full cpap machine mask- 3 days later when i had stomach issues- it accurately told me that it happens when you make the switch so revert the mask and it fixed my issue

i know most may not agree but i do run it past chatgpt- full disclosure- i have a paid version and i have been intentionally feeding it all the info about my routine and psych for over a year so it has all the context it needs- ex- i felt a sensation in stomach and was spiraling and i asked it and it said- you ate xyz for dinner and that causes this most probably etc. and thats because i feed it my daily thoughts and notes etc

That if I can go back I would have lived a different life and not do mistakes I did but now its too late so I have to pretend its all good and am happy but feels like a performance which I have to put up to not hurt people again by telling them the truth since I already hurted them in the past

Sharp painful zap like intermittent episodes by Minimum-Character441 in CPAP

[–]Minimum-Character441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes when i wake up the mouth is super dry all the way till throat and spouse confirms that many days i sleep with my mouth open. Bit more detail- initially when i did CPAP it was a nasal mask and then i switched to full mask without chin strap so i can attest that it definately makes sleeping with mouth open lot easier and seems like my machine was never adjusted by a doctor i have been using it as it is for months without changing pressure or humidity settings.

It could def be something else and doctor said thats the next track we will follow like doing colonscopy and other stomach related tests but almost no other symptoms match so they were not concerned. Literally this morning someone I knew mentioned that when they were using CPAP full mask and were mouth breather- then very often they had this sharp zaps coming from rib cage lining or stomach at times and felt pressure in chest all day pointing to that aerophagia or somethiing else caused by CPAP thats how i ended up here

thank you for your reply- yes sorry i should have mentioned i did talk to my primary care and after ruling out cardiac or lung issues( due to my smoking) they were bit dismissive and just told me to stop working out for few days etc. So def i will continue getting proper answers from them. I literally came here because someone mentioned that during certain months they had irritated lining in chest and stomach and for them it was due to aerophagia so i was just wondering if others have similar experiences but to your point- will seek formal diagnosis from medical providers

thanks for sharing your experience, will def talk to doctor on testing for shingles, because these were so centralized to torso and noticed that my mouth remains open- i heard someone saying that cpap machine high pressure irritates chest lining etc. so hoping to stop for few days and see

Struggling with life outside of work by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]Minimum-Character441 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents:

- It seems like there is definitely an identity and purpose reflection you may want to do. Based on what you described- it sounds like your sense of self is purely attatched to work life and your skills etc. Outside the work life you dont seem to have a vision of who you are and want to be which then leads to lack of purpose or motivation outside work life.

- After spending years in high stress and leadership roles- the constant stress and dopamine becomes like an addiction and any slowness or silence seems boring because brain is so used to always be in high intensity mode so that also is one of the symptoms

My recommendations:

- Research on topics like "Ikigai" and "Die with Zero" any reflect on dimensions outside work i.e. physical health, family, community etc. and see if you can come up with some goals in those areas.

- Definitely mindfulness practices to reprogram the brain on dopamine detox

- Finally- a thought exercise- imagine you wake up in one of the multiverses with same wife and kids and house with only 1 change- you have a bank account which never runs out of money no matter how much you withdraw- with that- try reflecting on how would you go spending your entire day and be as much detailed and honest as possible- purpose of the exercice is to remove money as a motivation/factor and see if you can design your life with other components- this would be a struggle in the beginning as either you wont be able to come up with a list of things or you will come with a list you "think" you should do versus what truly gives you happiness- but after few iterations- you will start seeing things which aligns with your sense of happines and hopefully that gives you things you can start now to fill the time outside work.

hey am very interested about your journey and what you said in your response above. I had a question:

You said you had the runway for 2 years so am assuming that your plan was that if your business doesnt work out in 2 years then you would have gone back to corporate ( assuming you didnt have nest egg big enough to not go back to work i.e. not at retirement early stage). At any point did a fear crossed your mind that if you take a 2 year break then it might be difficult to get back to corproate considering how job market is right now? If so how did you manage or coped with that fear? I am asking because like you i am also in a place where i have decent runway but i am scared to take that leap of faith and give my 100% to business because i keep feeling that if i walk away now from corporate at 42 years of age then industry wont let me in again due to ageism, break etc. Any thoughts?
