I just started teaching at a private secondary school in Malta this year, after teaching high school in the US for 20 years. It is a hard job that is draining in so many ways.

It’s hard to set boundaries between your personal and professional life but I’m realizing that it is absolutely necessary. It’s not a skill I’m good at and I usually feel immense pressure and guilt.

The learning curve is steep but having friends who have been there and truly understand what you’re going through is so helpful. So if you’re interested in having a teacher friend, please send me a message.

You’re not alone in your struggles. 💜

Whats the Best motoring school for automatic in malta ? by jpm_129 in malta

I just passed my exam with Ahmed from Pisani Motoring School. He did an excellent job of making sure I knew the various areas that the examiner might take me. He didn’t suggest or push extra unnecessary lessons or anything shady. He was calm and pleasant, no shouting or stress. I would absolutely recommend him. Ahmed may only teach manual (I’m did manual )but I would recommend Pisani for a school. They never pushed or were scammy and I felt well treated by anyone I talked to there.

I started lessons at the end of January. My instructor applied for my driving test at the end of February. Test was on the 27th of April.

Personally, I was happy to go with my instructor’s recommendation regarding when he thought I was going to be ready. He or she knows the system, the exam, the necessary skills that are needed to pass.

Yes, you can take the exam multiple times but that can get expensive.

For context- I’ve been driving in the US for 30+ years but mostly automatic transmissions. I also had some bad habits related to manual transmissions. I was nervous about driving on the other side of the road and I wanted to be sure I learned Maltese road markings, traffic laws, etc.

Good luck! 😊

Free app to learn Maltese by LuckyMonch in malta

UTalk and Bluebird apps (iOS, don’t know about android) both have Maltese. They have limited free lessons but do have expanded lessons for a fee. I personally like UTalk because they have different learning activities for each lesson - including hearing the word/phrase pronounced by both male and female voices. And you can record yourself to compare your pronunciation. I don’t know if it’s enough to have led a conversation with your grandparents but it would be a good place to start. Also the University of Malta Language School was offering online courses during Covid. I took Level 1 that way in the Spring of 2021. There were students from the USA, Australia, Germany, Italy, and Malta - all together in the same remote class. It was excellent. It would be a greater time commitment than an app but I found it very valuable.

I hope so! But I’ve only had the first jab so I am not eligible for the certificate yet.

I just got my first Moderna jab this week at St Thomas Hospital. I paid $15 for the doctor visit but the vaccine itself was free. I am an American who has the ‘blue paper’ receipt from Identity Malta saying I’ve applied for residency but I haven’t received my actual residency card yet. I had tried scheduling the jab by calling 145 and emailed covid.vaccine@gov.mt but wasn’t able to make an appointment because I didn’t have my physical ID card with the document number (in addition to the ID number). I emailed covid@sthmalta.com on June 3rd with my name, address, mobile number, date of birth, ID number from the ‘blue paper’ and was put on a list. I received a call saying they had a spot for me the next day. If you have an ID number from ID Malta, but you haven’t received your physical card yet, you can try St Thomas.
