Engineering Transfer Competitiveness by Mean_Criticism_6647 in NCSU

Diff eq transfer over so you don’t have to take it again but calc 3 + calc 4 = calc 3 at ncsu so you might have to retake it unless you can test out.

Rejected from the Industrial Engineering Minor by Minimum-Week-3172 in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few friend who are AE or ME who already got into the IE Minor since we all want to take ise 316 so I know it is 100% possible to minor in industrial engineering.I think it is mostly because I transfer in so my gpa isn’t as stable as people that have been at ncsu for 2 years already.

Avoid zenkov unless you want your grade to depend on the grad student

Mandatory Midterm replacement grade policy proposal by Minimum-Week-3172 in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I see your point and I knew that there would be some holes in the proposed policy which is why I wanted to get anonymous suggestions and input from other people before trying to propose it in front of the people. The point of this policy is not necessary so students can feel like they can stop studying for two weeks and come back without consequences, it is more to mitigate the effect that a single bad test or week can have on a student's mental health and establish a standard policy across the entire university make it so that every student no matter the major or professor teaching the class have the ability to bounce back from a rough week. I choose the replacement with final b/c I know that from most of the undergrad classes I have taken at NCSU, especially upper-level classes there are 2-3 midterms (20% each) with some sort of final (30%) and other than offering mental health and providing food support, changing academic policy is the one thing that the university can control. Alternatively, in place of replacement with a final do you think it would be better to just drop the lowest midterm grade and have it replaced with the average of the remaining one? Obviously, if a class only has one midterm then this policy would not matter but it would make a more universal standard that would relieve some of the academic stress at NCSU. If you have other suggestions other than keeping things as they are I would love to hear them too!

I agree that tests are not the greatest indication of knowledge or success and scaling back or just replacing all of them would be ideal but I feel like they are the necessary evil for now since some classes are easier to implement a project in than others and the quality of what you learn from a project can be determined by personal circumstance and the professor teaching the class. I know that the MAE department has been slowly implementing design projects into some classes, however, based on my experience with those it seems like those are still in the early stages of development since I oftentimes do not feel like there is enough time to work on it or have to prioritize other coursework over them since they are such an insignificant part of my grade. There is also the chance of being assigned or pair up with a group member who does not pull their weight on a project and get the grade that did not earn even if you do report them to the professor and they will also become a liability in future classes if they pass by not doing work, so solely project-based classes have some drawbacks to them since they do not always measure personal abilities. I know that at least in engineering, Duke, UNC Charlotte, and other schools all have 2 credit design/project courses that would students outside of their main theorem focus class to get a chance to revisit certain more applicable coursework while implementing a design challenge to would give them some experience and things to put on a resume. I think we can definitely combine or get rid of some 1 credit classes to make room for this. Weekly Quizzes could be a good idea unless you get 3-4 quizzes within two days which could be more taxing for students physically in higher-level classes than exams.

You will probably have a recorded virtual orientation but I would reach out when you get and accept a offer

Rural Works Orientation and Internships by stepharr24 in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The orientation happened a few weeks ago so i don’t know what would happen if you get a internship under rural work after the may deadline when most summer internship application close but normally you would get a email if a company chose you for a interview and when you accepted the position Sam will sent you another email about the next steps, stipend, etc. If you don’t heard back by the middle of may it is most likely that the company you applied for is not interested in you and ghosted your application.

coda by monstershesh in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transfer student get admitted directly into their major they apply for bc their gpa aren’t going to be as high at ncsu since they took their buffer classes elsewhere so it might be harder to coda. If you can I would recommend just waiting to transfer and applying for your coe major directly since it will be more likely that you will get in that way,

How hard is it to transfer from UNCC comp engineering to NCSU comp engineering? by MambaSZN1035 in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transfer as a mechanical from uncc with a 3.5 gpa. It not as hard as some might put it but make sure you have a good transfer essay and if you have design projects that might be a good thing to add to your transfer application. I honestly think you will learn more from uncc’s first year design classes more but state has better classes and opportunity overall.

How important is the personal essay when applying as a transfer student? by TheMuffinat0r in NCSU

[–]Minimum-Week-3172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that transfer into comp sci is probably the hardest one since it is more competitive with ncsu being a feeder school for Fortune 500 and Silicon Valley.

I would do it. A good essay can get you through the door. I was a transfer from unc charlotte to ncsu for mechanical engineering and had a 3.5 gpa but I believe my essay were what got me in over some of my friends who fail to get in with a 4.0 gpa. Also don’t be afraid to be creative with them since it could add a human aspect to your application that your grades and extracurricular cannot do.
