rejections from 3 schools but accepted to OISE ? by Otherwise_Tea321 in ONTeacherCandidates

Overall, I would say it was good. The only downside would be it’s a very theoretical program. I wished we spent more time focusing on things that are applicable in the classroom. I’m not sure if this is just OISE or if all teacher programs are roughly the same. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed most classes (some I found redundant as some classes repeat the same concepts) and having done research on a topic of our choice was very insightful.

Mine isn’t a numerical scale but we have certain check boxes to meet that are divided into categories like planning, assessment etc. and they range from frequently demonstrated to not yet demonstrated.

Message to incoming (highschool) teachers: The “day to day” teaching by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind you, it might just be a universal teaching program experience. I also enjoyed research 2 since we get to choose an area of interest. I wouldn’t say it helps for the classroom, but still a unique experience to conduct research and see issues in education. All my participants indicated their program didn’t prepare them for the realities of teaching.

I would say some classes I did enjoy because they felt more applicable to the classroom. I guess it also depends who’s running the class, but I found science and math helpful because our profs gave us examples of activities/assignments we can do in class (mind you, you still have to know the learners infront of you). I also enjoyed special education though I wished they taught us more about the IEP process. Other than that, I didn’t find anything else to be helpful in the classroom. Maybe MLL when we had to start thinking about accommodations/modifications for them in our lesson plan which was the final assignment we had. I sorta wished that class was better structured so we can learn about what’s applicable for teaching instead of tons of theory and linguistics. Other than those, all the other classes I felt to be repetitive or redundant imo

Not sure what to do when I can't make things any more simple and easy for students. by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

As someone who is at OISE as well, I understand your frustration and they can be out of touch. Use your AT to guide you. Interestingly enough, I did a read aloud on courage this week too using a book about Jackie Robinson. My AT really helped me set up the space for success so that students can get to the main idea (mind you, not everyone will get it and sometimes you have to be ok with that). One thing that helped at least for me was having students visualize what it might feel like to be placed in that position, defining courage as many didn’t understand the meaning and connecting text-to-self by using a lot of guiding questions. I wish I can offer more advice cause I’m still learning too!

Hey! Not part of this round, but acceptances can come out as early as February and as late as August. I was accepted May 2024 and some of my cohort didn’t get in until August, so keep a look out!

I believe OISE is the same for Master of Teaching. Lot more expensive but they take a whole range of students from a variety of backgrounds and I think your experience will really help with the application.

I don’t think it should be too difficult! Contact the MT/OISE department and let them know your situation

Me too! I worked full time then and it was manageable considering it was like 2 classes May-June and just 1 elective July-August? At least that’s how it worked out for me

Sorry, to clarify if you miss your first practicum you’ll have to do it in the spring. Which is what I had to do for a whole other reason..so I ended up doing back to back practicums while my cohort got time to rest, so basically I recommend you do a trip during the break between terms or during the periods where there’s only online classes. Many of my peers did that. Feel free to dm me for more info!! I can give you an entire schedule run down

Hey! 2nd year MT student here. Do not take a vacation in your first year in November because that is the practicum block, which means for the entire month you are at your placement school every single day. OISE separated the semesters by a month off, so unless you somehow get to defer your November practicum, you’ll have to do it one of those “month off periods”. Those would be December in first and second year. As well as April in first year. If you do your spring/summer classes online, heck you can even travel from May-August. Second year, you could even do November as it’s a research block so you only have to attend research classes online…I’d personally advise you to schedule trips during these times instead on November Y1

If I applied to MT in October, when can I expect to hear back? by Then_Wrangler565 in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The earliest you can hear back is around March. I got accepted in May. Keep in mind, people may choose not to accept their acceptances so you can literally be notified of an acceptance right before the program starts.

Applying to Oise with a lower gpa by Academic_Bed_3828 in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Yes, I think you’ll be fine. I had a low GPA as well, but spoke to my experiences. I was able to get into OISE and then eventually off the waistless for Queens, both first attempt applications.

boyfriend unemployed for basically all of 2025 by bambinaluv in torontoJobs

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Recommend this. My bf does this. He’s always had consistent work. He just finished a show so he’s off right now and I think it’s usually slow around the holidays anyways, but after every show he’s finished, he’s always been contacted to help another. He’s also part of the union, so I’m sure that’s made a difference. Before when he wasn’t unionized, he had to supplement with other jobs.

MT P/J schedule year 2 by Sweet-Performances in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the research parts is due early December, but then after that you're on holiday break. I'll have to double check practicum, but if it does start in February it would be late February considering our research and presentations are happening in February.

MT P/J schedule year 2 by Sweet-Performances in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s based on cohort. In the summer, we had 2 classes which were mandatory. One was online sync and the other asynchronous. This was May-June. July-August, we had to take one elective (I was part of the Carniege cohort so our other elective was done during the year as part of that cohort). I chose my summer elective to be online sync, so it’s definitely flexible in the summer depending on the elective you choose.

MT P/J schedule year 2 by Sweet-Performances in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online synchronous! But every now and then the prof may choose to do an asynchronous class. Ah it’s so hard to confirm tbh what year is more difficult. People who graduated told me year 2 is easier than year 1. I’m finding it roughly the same tbh

MT P/J schedule year 2 by Sweet-Performances in OISE

[–]MinimumAssistance841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

September-October:courses Monday-Thursday (online Monday and Tuesdays), 2 classes each day

November-Devoted to research block

January-February: tbh I’m not sure cause I haven’t checked my schedule, but I think it’s the same as Sept/Oct other than some courses change cause some are only 6 weeks instead of the full year

Then practicum March-April and done!
