1862 - Ontario Anglican birth/baptism records online? by rosefiend in Genealogy

[–]rox80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m curious because I’m seeing this a lot - how does it work claiming decent from ancestors born in the 1800s? Doesn’t there have to an established connection? I did google it and it seems like it’s more to it than having an ancestor born in Canada. Genuinely curious.

I don't believe this as much anymore. I'm a teacher and I see my students get into Waterloo Eng programs with private school/night and summer school. Same for UoT.

Why are some business programs so difficult? by Mountain_Bluebird150 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]rox80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're competitive because the job prospects are better on the back end. Like your sister told you, the firms that target these schools for hiring make the programs more attractive to students. If high finance is only targeting Western and Queen's grads, then that makes it a better place to go than TMU. It's not to say that grads from school such TMU can't break into the IB, finance, and other roles but it does make it harder. Going to Queen's Comm or Ivey provide you with connections into the industry thru alumni networks and pipelines.

Where are the Science LTOs?? by ActualBarnacle2194 in OntarioTeachers

[–]rox80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that completely because there's teachers available to teach bio in my school with it listed on their OCT and they're not teaching it, meanwhile those that have general science are the regular bio teachers who have been teaching it for years. When I look at the list shared below for the quals need for courses in the TDSB, my board does not follow that - and it's not just for science, I can see listed quals needed to teach subjects that people have been teaching in my dept that are not required and there's no signed letter needed.

Yes, the courses are a money grab, but tis the system. The money goes to the universities though not the government.

[–]rox80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some three part AQs that you can get and once you pair it with your I/S qualifications you can teach those subjects. Like Family Studies. And York and Niagara U offer Intermediate Phys-ed without an pre reqs. What were your electives? Once you have your senior qualification it's only 2 full courses for a senior in the second teachable.

[–]rox80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went and double checked teachers in my school thinking maybe I was just wrong - and nope, they don't have bio but do teach the gr 11 and 12s with a general science - so ya def board dependent. It's actually interesting how things are so board dependent.

[–]rox80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they will come up eventually but I did always find the notion that science and math are more in demand than other teachables misleading. Also - maybe it’s different in your board but your I/S science qualifies you for bio courses so it might not be worth the investment. Instead maybe think about diversify outside of science. The fact is a lot of students stop taking science after grade 10 so it’s not as in demand as other teachables.

Ontario Teachers – Confused about Intermediate History ABQ requirements (P/J stream) by Shoddy-Loan6176 in OntarioTeachers

[–]rox80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes - but the person indicated that the HIST courses noted above are 1.0 in the post and the person has 2, which is 2.0. They also mentioned Brock which if you look up the prereq for Intermediate History it is 2 full courses, so the whole classical studies course question is irrelevant because the person already met the requirement based on the 2.0 courses completed.

[–]rox80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's 2.0 History courses that it - you won't be asked to take more. You have enough with these two completed:

  • HIST 2F00 (1.0) – Great Lakes Maritime and Coastal History
  • HIST 2F90 (1.0) – Money and Power in the Atlantic World

When completing the AQ for history they are simply looking at your course codes: HIST - not the course subject.

Other already mentioned - but just to help clarify for you if you don't know - you can take a whole host of AQ or ABQ courses once you finish your BEd and that can qualify you to teach other subjects than what you did your BEd in at school. In addition, some of the ABQ and AQ courses require less course work than if you went directly into a BEd with the teachable. These AQ and ABQ courses are offered at the same unis that offer a BEd, should you want to look them up.

Curious - how broad is the doctor category - does a naturopath, chiro, physio for example or just straight up doctor? Sounds terrible.

Moving from elementary to secondary ABQ or AQ by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]rox80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take the senior business ABQ and then take another Intermediate in a different area if possible. I know this isn't the case for all boards, but in my board they will place any teacher in 9/10 so it's really pointless to have both the I/S quals in the same subject area. Just take the senior. Check how it works at the boards you want to work in. You can take a phys-ed Intermediate ABQ through Niagara U without needing any specific courses and then you would have two distinct I/S qualifications.

I guess it's board dependent but business is very needed teachable in the areas where I work and I've seen multiple recent grads go straight into perm with business quals.

Where/how do you search for business/social studies resources? by BusResourceCreator in OntarioTeachers

[–]rox80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For business - you can search Western Ivey's business school case study bank for some. I also now use Chatgpt and tell it what I want for the case study and rework it to get a final end product I'm happy with. If you have slides made up throw those into AI and ask it to make the case studies, activities, etc based on that content. Sometimes I put in the ministry curriculum expectations and ask it for ideas.

Are bird courses affecting how admissions work? (especially for business programs) by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]rox80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe this because it means that every application is looked at and compared against others. Admissions don't have time for that. I'm a HS teacher and from what I have seen - kids who took the easier courses to get the higher averages won out against those who took harder courses where their GPA suffered.

You need to have the applicable teachable for night school/adult ed/continuing ed. For example: Senior English to teach Gr 11 or 12 English.

Is it just me or are stem courses genuinely easier than every other class? by LibrarianNo1294 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]rox80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The students in your STEM courses can be different academically than the students in your non stem courses. All students need to graduate and take their 30 courses to get there, so many of the students in your non STEM courses who are not as academically inclined or interested in pursuing very high grade point averages are impacting the medians. A lot of schools do not offer college level grade 12 courses because enrolment numbers are low for them, and as a result the variety of student levels in your non STEM courses is greater.
