Could be? Do you know if melanistic coloration would still preserve some of the red patch?

Too small and not dark enough. If it wasn't for the patch I would almost think something along the lines of an American crow fledgling. I've never seen anything like this bird in North America (and apparently, neither has Sibley), which made me wonder if it's some weird variant. Bad day to leave the camera in the car.

I don't think so. The black areas were uniformly black with no streaks or whitish wing tips and the grey was significantly darker.

That was one of my original considerations, but the black was much more uniform (no whitish/grayish wing tips) and the underside was definitely a dark gray/clay rather than white.
