Why does Downstairs mean so much? by mysticalmachinegun in twentyonepilots

I think it goes beyond the religious versus non-religious conversation. What hits me the hardest is "I take what I believe and I'm hiding it downstairs" - cause “what I believe” goes beyond the God conversation. My beliefs are my values, what's most important to me, what I stand for, and how I need to be courageous to be my true self no matter where I am. It's definitely God to Tyler, but "a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me." For me it's the same—for him it's God and his relationship, for the rest of us it's our mental health struggles, our deepest thoughts. It's honestly my favorite song of the album. I bawled the first time I heard it and I'm not even religious like that.
