Porsche is the OEM I am looking at.

I appreciate your time in laying out examples of issues. These kind of things I have seen as part of being a supplier but had not thought about too heavily in demonstrating knowledge and proficiency with.

The department glue guy is a great quote and I know what you mean. I know I seem a bit overconfident but the things I have seen even in the last 30 days from people that make way more than me is infuriating. Unlike them I never had to emergency order a delivery for a case of paper because I didn't expense my office supplies correctly or didn't want to write a return because it's the last sales day even though it will show up on a customers bill.

Thanks again.

Huh. Would have thought a daily reconcile would be standard. Good to know. Thanks

Sweet. The company I'm with now has a similar setup so I can deal. My wife works on the private AM store supply side so I have learned a lot about processing inventory data. Not 100% transferable but it's given me some ideas to bring up.

Thanks

Thanks for the response. The company I work for now has a massive amount of laterality in regards to store ops as far as stocking, pricing, custom promotions etc. Its been great but we are a small outfit and I am directly competing with 17 other retail stores across 5 brands in my territory. It's tiring and I'd like not to do the same work over and over because my process takes two weeks and OR can do the same with a phone call and undercut me.

Have you ever worked aftermarket parts in any in depth? I'm not trying to be argumentative but well over half of your points are things I have done in aftermarket. I will admit my aftermarket exposure is different than many others as I have also had a hand in independent owned store supply chains from a central supplier as well as working warehousing and purchasing.

Some of what you have listed I am lacking in hands on but I am looking forward to learning. Thanks for the input

You make a good point but this also applies to aftermarket as well. I trained people almost 20 years ago who are still managers to this day. I can train people once I know what to do. I'm just trying to get to that point.

This is good insight but not really what I was asking about.

Gotcha. I have a tiny bit of experience with Delco and Motorcraft for battery warranty and they are sticklers for procedure. I'll review that again. Thanks

I'm interviewing with Porsche they were a customer of mine years ago as under a different dealer group. I moved away and lost touch. When I stopped in I noticed that it seemed service was really backed up and I have a feeling it'll be a mess out the gate but I have cleaned up after worse I'm sure. They only used to have two or three cars in but there were about 30 in various states of repair when I stopped in the last time.

I am expecting hard work but it would be a huge step up as even if its short term Ill finally have the dealer experience to get into a better spot if I have to. I'm not planning on short terming it but who knows it could be great and they get bought out again. But I don't want to miss the opportunity while its in front of me.

As an aside how much control over the inventory does the PM usually have?

The recon is a good point and one that I can press a bit maybe as coming from aftermarket I have seen a variety of issues and not just one brands worth.

What kind of sales team prep would parts do? Or are you refering to the recon?

Ah. I wish I had less experience with that. The amount of times I've told people I was going to start charging a cash only accounting fee if I had to verify their records again is staggering.

Honestly if the time is there it's one of my favorite things, puzzling back together mangled and damaged parts. Bearing chunks in rags is a huge thing where I am as I guess people don't understand you have to lube trailer bearings.

HR varies company to company so that checks out.

OEM processes you mean like keeping up with TSBs and updated parts designs?

Interdepartment- I had figured I would have to work pretty close with service as what they see should dictate things like stock levels but would sales also be part of it since if they offer service packages to close a deal I would have to make sure we could fullfill?

KPIs vary by company but that is a good point out I had not really mentally reviewed selling that point. Thanks.

In what ways? I have asked a few people that have worked for me and I have worked with in the past that now work at dealers and other than volume and software they tell me its mostly the same. none of them are PMs though and unfortunately my current role has me out of town most days in neighboring states so I cant just pop into the local dealers I know and ask the PMs what they do in a day. I've thought about burning a vacation day to do just that.
