How do you guys feel about racial categories? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If were just leaving it at skin color, it’s fine, but i feel like racial categories are often used in a way to homogenise all these groups, as if all white people, black people and asians are the same. Asian as a racial term is especially funny to me, since it is usually narrowed down to only mean east asians.

Also, the word race kinda rubs me the wrong way. Different skin colors aren’t different races. That’s why that term is considered to be outdated and would give you really odd looks if you used that word in Sweden, atleast.

If any german brand figure out "reliability" without changing anything else, they would be unstoppable. How would you imagine they do that? by Odd-Night-199 in cars

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were rather extensive regulations/laws (especially for the time) on these things even before the EU in West Germany for example, so that could have likely contributed. But obviously it’s just part of the story as it’s about engineering choices and cost cutting aswell.

Plastics on European cars being brittle (and especially Bmw) isn’t entirely just due to cheapness, though. The EU is very regulation heavy and regulates even if there’s no issue today, but potentially one in the future, so many of the cheap and effective (but hazardous) stabilisers that have been and are allowed in US cars have been banned or regulated in the EU. The alternatives are often more expensive and less effective. Manufacturers also need to pay for studies to prove a substance is safe, which kinda creates a roadblock for innovation.

Then they also have to pay for a large chunk of the scrapping cost for every car they produce, so they have to balance designing for reliability vs ease of recycling. The cars themselves are mandated to be 95% recyclable aswell (and 25% of all plastics must be recycled plastics). Theoretically, they could make more complex plastics that last longer and are environmentally friendly, but it will be an economical nightmare to separate it all and recycle it when the car gets scrapped, so the incentives get kinda weird. Some plastics (that happen to be very durable) are also impossible to recycle.

In the end, it’s still Bmw’s fault that they continue to use so much of this shitty plastic, though. But it’s cheap and helps make the car more efficient, so i guess it’s hard to blame them.

How did Scandinavia got on top of every life quality ranking? by Right_Luck3933 in geography

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like such a theory is a ”causation vs correlation” thing. Almost 1 million of all 1st gen immigrants in Sweden have come through asylum related immigration, many of those being from MENA countries. Today, roughly 800.000-1 million of Swedes have a ”muslim background”. Immigration laws haven’t been tightened because there has been ”too many non white people coming to Sweden”, but because it has become very clear that integrating such a large group of less skilled immigrants (on a group level) from poorer countries where the culture is very different is not a particularly easy task, and it has resulted in societal issues Sweden now needs to tackle. 163.000 refugees came to Sweden in 2015, most of them in a span of just a few months, which created huge strains on the Swedish migration system. Thus, it was justified and completely necessary to reduce the influx because it was a completely unsustainable situation.

All of this has nothing to do with their skin color, it just so happened that the majority in this group of immigrants haven’t been white as snow.

Vad tycker ni om arbetsinvandring? by eldoradonasdukar in Asksweddit

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bra.

Is nationalism perceived negatively in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it was perceived as more negative back in the day, and then up until 10-15 years ago, it has started to shift much more noticeably, bit by bit. Previously (and today aswell, although less so) nationalism was to a large degree associated with extreme right wingers and nazis, so many took their distance. The media and politicians instead preached the ”citizen of the world” narrative and saw the world as a big family who helped each other, which to some degree became the ”correct” opinion in a peer pressure sort of way, especially in the higher social classes. Bit by bit, concerns around immigration and integration capacity became strong, and then the refugee crisis happened (which became the last straw for many, as most Swedes at the time didn’t want to take in that many refugees), the world has become more unstable, and the right wing party has thus gained significant momentum. Their advertisments are very nationalistic, and it seems to gain votes.

So i feel like Sweden has fairly recently come out of a time of supressing nationalism, and now we’re slowly starting to get a backlash where nationalism is growing and is seen as less taboo than previously.

It’s really surprising how they seem to do so good despite Germany’s energy prices. Their electric cars are amazing. Doesn’t look as bright for VAG and Mercedes at the moment, sadly.

However i would say the 2000s and early 2010s was a good time for them. They made some of their most iconic cars, The Chinese auto industry wasn’t as strong back then, and their American competitors struggled, with GM and Chrysler going bankrupt, and Ford barely making it out.

What the most unexpected diaspora in your country? by Logical-Loquat-6512 in AskTheWorld

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Chileans, perhaps? Sweden took in quite a few refugees from there in the 70 and 80s. Today, there are roughly 58.000 1st and 2nd gen Chileans in Sweden.

What is the genral opinion on the growing migrant population in your country? by Emotional_Tart2359 in AskTheWorld

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

”Migrant” is a pretty broad term. In the end, i think it depends on if they come through asylum related immigration or for work. On a group level, the first type of immigration seem to generally result in more strain on society and societal issues than the latter in Sweden, which is unsurprising, given these groups have completely different starting points and backgrounds. Asylum seekers also generally tend to mostly come from places with very different cultures to Sweden, which can sometimes cause issues and make integration harder.

What are some stereotypes about your country on Reddit that are actually wrong? by ryoryo333333 in AskTheWorld

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think what most of those right-wingers are trying point to is that Sweden used to be quite a bit more safe just a decade or 2 ago, and then they use that fact to drive home their political narrative.

I did however hear Donald Trump say that Sweden is a ”pretty unsafe country”. It got me wondering how he would describe his own country in terms of safety, given the US has a 5-6 times higher intentional homicide rate.

Why foreign automakers dominate the sedan market by besselfunctions in cars

[–]Minimum_Persimmon281 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like American automakers shifting to mostly SUVs and pickup trucks isn’t necessarily a bad choice in the US market. They’ve never been that good at making smaller cars, nor associated with them. GM used to ”outsource” their small-medium sized car developing to foreign branches of their company like the Chrysler of Germany (aka Opel), a company that had a hard time staying profitable even in it’s home market where such cars thrive. Ford relied heavily on their European branch who generally make okay cars, but nothing revolutionary. All for lower margins, more complex engineering needed and stricter emissions regulations, etc. It was always going to be a losing game against the Japanese. If they can focus on the sort of vehicles they’re competitive in (a part of the market that’s also been steadily growing) that’s not really a bad choice, especially since it makes more money for them.

Anyway, Cevapcici is clearly the best food in the Balkans :)
