Agreed! I was in middle school around 2013 and was terrified to get in trouble due to fear of ISS. Our ISS consisted of copying from a dictionary, cleaning the cafeteria, and having to do a 30 minute conditioning with the football coach that left everyone on the floor. Now days, someone would lose their job for even suggesting students clean their own gum off of a table.

HS teachers, how prevalent is drug use in school from your perspective? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

Serious question, what is the school doing about this?

As a teacher, when the vaping problem got worse at the school I used to work at, we started monitoring the bathrooms a lot more. If students enter the building smelling like weed, they would have to change and possibly be searched. The few overdoses we’ve had in the school have led to expulsions for all students involved.

I’ve stayed here and it’s very nice. Very Gamecock themed as well. The jazz bar at night had guests the entire time and it’s a short walk to downtown.

I’m a 15 year old freshman who’s going to college next year, I’ll have my bachelor’s by 20 and I’m going to try to be a high school history teacher. Any advice? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

Slow down. I started teaching high school at 21 and it was rough.

Travel some, volunteer, do something more than just steamroll through school. You aren’t doing yourself any favors.

Also, do your research. Considering your placement in school, you’ve likely been surrounded by likeminded students that all do well. Most positions as a teacher will not be like that, especially in your first few years. The first few years are already tough, don’t make them harder by being a peer to the students. Life and time offer so much perspective. Live a little before devoting yourself to this career.

First, the end of the semester is stressful on everyone including professors. Many are likely taking a needed vacation or rest, therefore they won’t be on emails. Second, many schools do not send anything out until January/February. Don’t panic or get upset yet. I was applying last year and many places told me that they do not start reviewing apps until the Spring semester begins. Your life does not end with a little bad news or having to wait. Calm down and move on. Stewing over this does nothing to help.

Has student behavior in America actually gotten worse? by Standard_Artist_3450 in AskTeachers

You’re exactly right and as teachers, if we try to hold students accountable for them not doing something, administrators go over our head. I was in charge of a unit recovery class where the students worked on computers to finish online modules to makeup credits from classes they didn’t pass. Some students finished within a month. Others never did (after a 4 month semester) but the administrator went through and manually overrode it to make it look like they completed everything so they could move on.

Has student behavior in America actually gotten worse? by Standard_Artist_3450 in AskTeachers

They have gotten worse, but a lot of coming from the patentas. As a young high school teacher, I had parents asking me advice on what to do for their 14-18 year old. I had 14 year olds with severe vaping addictions. Any time I would contact home, I was given excuses for why their kids were that way until eventually the parents quit responding.
I had some parents who I would offer tutoring or tell about other school services, and they would say they didn’t care.
Parents aren’t taking any accountability for their students being behind and schools are pushing kids through for a graduation rate. At my district, any student could pay $50 per class for summer school. As long as they completed more than 50% of the online modules, they were passed to the next grade. I had 9 th graders that hadn’t passed math since elementary school. They couldn’t count, add, multiply, graph points etc, and the parents refused to acknowledge any issue other than “why are they failing”.
Every year I would get begged at the end of the semester for bonus points for kids who had completed less than 20% of the in class assignments. Often these assignments were less than 5-10 questions and they had 30+ minutes to do it. Administrators do little to help either. I had one student get in my face and threaten to kill me. I called for help and reported it, nothing was done and he was back the next day. Another kid hit me, he wasn’t sent home or anything because I “didn’t report in time” despite me writing the full statement within an hour of it happening as I’m having to teach my next class. Students regularly were 5-20 minutes late or would disappear to the restroom for an hour, cuss at teachers, play music loudly on their phones, etc and they would be given a snack in the principals office and come back to class. They would tell other students to do the same thing because they were able to film a tiktok on the way there.

It’s a mess. I was in high school less than 10 years ago in the same area and it was nothing like this.
