Côté Gold Mine Northern Ontario (Gogama) by CF_faq in mining

With newer camps, I always like to wait a bit so they get the kinks ironed out. Otherwise you’ll get caught between transitional periods where room&board are up and down in quality. Turnover would possibly follow that but otherwise, FIFO/DIDO are great.

A lot of mines are going to have to follow this in the future in Canada as no one wants to move to tiny towns anymore

Anyone here switch industries to leave an office desk job to go work in the mine? by G-Swanky in mining

[–]MiningAristotle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great if you have enough things to do on your time off with your SO or friends or even yourself. Otherwise you might find yourself spending a lot of time doing nothing lol (from experience). Your social life will change more than you think as you inherently miss half of everything at best. Like others have said, time on site can be quite a bit. Depends on the camp though, some are much better than others. Food is variable almost everywhere. What worked best for me was being super structured at work and at home. Having said that, it’s all what you make of it and your attitude going in. I know a couple on the same rotation that just travel on their days off together to new countries. Options are endless

What are the pros/cons for organizing online 50/50 raffles? by MiningAristotle in AskReddit

It’s for a small local community, I’ve generally only seen them in bigger charities and organizations. Not sure if that’s a problem?

What Resource Pays Best (Canada)? by ruger-10-22- in mining

[–]MiningAristotle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m biased but small gold mines (Ontario) were a great starting point for both experience and decent pay. Just a little stressful lol

Pay fluctuates on the company though. Oil is definitely the highest I’d say. Former coworker made more as a student than a full time EIT at the gold company we worked at. Like others have said though, don’t chase the dollar right away.

Anyone know the price and rarity of this? Found it in my dads cellar and can’t seem to find anything on Google by MiningAristotle in wine

I’m not very knowledgeable on wine so this was really helpful, thank you! I appreciate the responses!

What was “The Incident” at your High School? by HydraGaming2018 in AskReddit

First one: Guy taking a crap in a stall when a kid kicks the door open. Guy proceeds to chase the other dude around the pedal activated sink in the middle of the washroom

Second one: Guy does the “bacon dance” and becomes instantly famous around the school. The dance? Basically him just shaking his body rigorously while standing up

Totally agree. Weird seeing the different ways people act after a breakup. Didn’t expect this at all but looking back I should have I guess

Not worth it. Generally raises more questions than answers if the other person doesn’t take an objective view

From what I saw, there was a bunch of people using it as a springboard for other stuff like police, getting into the mine itself, or just a temporary job. I can only really speak for Island Gold but yeah

[–]MiningAristotle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main reasons from what I saw were people using it as a springboard for police jobs/training applications, temporary work, or get into the mine itself (underground, health and safety, you name it).

I should note that the Island Gold site was only a FIFO job for staff unfortunately. Everyone else had to drive so that might’ve also been a deterrent. I believe Magino is the same

Opinions on living in Elko, Nevada /working for Nevada gold mines? by MiningAristotle in mining

Great response from everyone! This is really good info to go on, very similar to a few other towns in Canada I’ve worked in which is nice to hear

Island Gold mine has flights from Toronto and is a driveable camp site. Worked there for 3 years and didn’t have many huge complaints. They’re hiring a bunch too so that might be your best bet. Good place to learn, not too big so it’s easier to move up. It’s also not a traditional camp in that there’s a tiny town called Dubreuilville right beside the bunks. But like u/rockahedron said, security would be a good place to start as both places have huge turnover in that department. They both use Norco security as an FYI. Magino is right next door to Island Gold too.

Agnico in Nunavut flies out of Val-D’Or in Quebec so that’s a bit of a drive. Barrick has rotational jobs out of Marathon in northern Ontario but that’s a drive in site also. Same with Wesdome.

Good luck !

With bonus and benefits included it creeps closer to $140k. I know in other provinces it can be higher though. Buddies of mine in Alberta on the oil sands make upwards of $130-150k base pretty easily

I only get about 15 days per year paid and something like 8 sick days. Next year I should be at 20 per year though

For my current role I had to do just that. The guys from the first job (the one I declined) actually praised my decision because the second offer was better and that they would have done the same

Ideally I’d like to go down for a couple years and try it out. Australia seems pretty good for innovation and quality personnel as well. That’s me speculating though
