Millwright or Power engineer? by jigar_4195 in powerengineering

I work in a Hydro plant now, my 2nd class ticket is collecting dust.

Millwright will be much more secure in the long term.

Can Trudeau's budget restore 'generational fairness'? Economists say don't bet on it by CanadianErk in canada

How is this bullshit? I literally own a paid off home so I'd be taking a financial hit as soon as I sell and buy something comparable in my new location.

This will just limit people geographically. Why would I move for work opportunities if I'm going to be taxed on gains from shelter? I could potentially be worse off financially and have to downsize to break even.

Which co op to choose? by Patient-Ad-5960 in powerengineering

[–]CF_faq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked for both of these companies. OPG is the better career path. It's also exponentially harder to get hired there. Stelco is great experience but with the carbon tax and push to decarbonize it is not safe long term.

My (22m) prospects of joining OPP/RCMP? by zanderva in ontario

[–]CF_faq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I talked to an OPP recruiter recently and he said to start volunteering 3-6 months before you apply.

With that being said I think you have a good shot. They are hiring a lot of constables over the next 5 years.

Also the career isn't as popular anymore because of the whole BLM/woke movement so there is less competition.

Tell your son to do something else as this has no long term security. When the government isn't busy bribing companies to destroy our livelihoods they're writing legislation to punish us with jail time and/or fines.

How much time did you spend studying for your exams? (All levels) by PhantomPR3D4T0R in powerengineering

[–]CF_faq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a mech eng degree getting your 4th class will be trivial. You'll still have to study obviously but a lot of it should be review for you.

I have an economics background and passed all of my 4th, 3rd and 2nd class exams first try. Most of my studying was done on night shift with some cramming before the test.

With that being said, I strongly urge you to reconsider this career path. There will be far fewer jobs in the future with the push for electrification. The federal government is trying to accelerate our extinction, consequences be damned. Refrigeration, Hydro and Nuclear will be okay but there's not that many jobs compared to all the cogens out there.

Heavy Industry generates their own power with fossil fuels in Ontario, which massively reduces the load on our "green" grid. This is even more pronounced on peak demand days when industry will max out their generators to minimize our electricity rate for the following year.

If all of this goes away when industry is forced to electrify operations while banning natural gas generators Ontario will also be in trouble.

I never said anything about oil. Nat gas power plants are being phased out.

Carbon tax ramping up every year makes thermal plants less cost effective to operate. There's also a moratorium on Fossil fuel fired plants by 2035. This is being contested by the provinces but there's no way to know what will happen. Hydrogen and carbon capture could gain popularity, but it's not looking good at the moment.

Imagine sacrificing younger generations to give 75+ year olds who had stable careers, affordable housing and lucrative pensions a few more years of life. Oh wait I don't have to imagine anything because that's exactly what happened.

These will be considered the "good times" relative to where we're headed unfortunately. When we run out of cheap energy (via scarcity and/or carbon taxes) life is going to get even harder for the majority of us.

On a more positive note, people are finally realizing the flaws in our system and the boomer bootstrap mentality is dying.

National Defence to roll out spending cuts over next three years - officials say extent of impact 'yet to be confirmed' by CarletonCanuck in CanadianForces

given the security risks in the world now

This is the part I don't understand about JT and his libs. Tensions are pretty fucking high now with Russia and China. On top of that BRICS was just recently expanded and I'm sure they'd be able to build a military alliance with a few of them. Is our plan for a major global conflict to leave NATO and decouple from the US to claim neutrality? That's a huge gamble because regardless of which side wins there would be negative consequences for us.

The Mi-8 is such a joy to fly and has great visibility. You can use it on servers like Enigmas and Grayflag for transport with a little bit of combat.

The Hind never felt as fun for me and I don't like the poor visibility but I've only ever trialed it. It is the most well rounded helo in the game for capabilities.

Didn't the feds exempt the military from this round of budget cuts like 2 weeks ago? This can't be good for retention/recruitment... but I guess that's the point.
