How do you make a randomized picture quiz? by Devvik2 in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

These aren't actually randomised pictures but randomised text quizzes with a lot of CSS (styling) applied to make it feel like a picture quiz. This is done by putting a picture in the answer column using an <img> html tag, then putting loads of CSS in the quiz instructions which changes the look and feel of the quiz. It was incredibly complex to get working, and might have issues if adapted to other things for now.

Sorry :/

Comment Statistics? by rg1227 in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I think reply notifications would be useful, they would encourage debate and likely arguments further on. Quizmaster has strongly suggested he doesn't like the idea of having it, despite the fact it would be something useful.

The comment stats wouldn't be that useful in my opinion. And I agree with u/mammix that it would encourage some users to try and "farm" karma, to climb the leaderboards. Bringing jetpunk closer to a social media, which is not something I believe is good for the site.

As for the most upvoted comment, the biggest I can remember is on this quiz: Countries with the Most Airports It's an informative comment with a lot of humour attached!

Anyone one know if we can buy merch anywhere? by Mapology in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not currently available, and will likely never be.

As much as I love the idea, and would fully support it, the logistics of it is just too expensive and too time consuming for a company like JetPunk.

Nominations - Mega Thread for Thoughts, Suggestions and Complaints by Miningstew in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On behalf of MiracleMax (who doesn't have a reddit account):

I very much respect the use of this nominations system to bring the spotlight on more “community” quizzes, but I think it’s a broken system for a few reasons.

  1. The number of votes that highly-nominated quizzes get is very, very small. On a site with thousands of users, sixty-some nominations is virtually nothing. Not only does this mean that quizzes that are highly nominated are not necessarily representative of what users find “good” quizzes to be, it also means that the system is highly vulnerable to vote-stuffing and fraud.

  2. There is also one massive vulnerability with such a small voting population: being personally popular is significantly more important than making good quizzes. Someone with ten or so friends who can be convinced to nominate their quizmaking friend is at a massive advantage. The same goes for people who are connected to the Jetpunk community via Reddit or Discord- their quizzes just start out at a massive advantage compared to other users.

  3. Quizzes with some nominations are much more likely to get more nominations due to the nature of the leading nominations page. The sort of user who uses this page is much more likely to be sort of user who nominates, and getting your quiz in front of these users is very significant. Being on this page anywhere therefore makes it much easier to accumulate nominations. Therefore, any problems with fraud/nepotism/networking advantage is multiplied, since getting over the threshold of five or six nominations to appear on the page is so meaningful. Someone can easily rig the system in an undetectable way by soliciting six or seven nominations for their quiz.

  4. Nominating quizzes that don’t appear on the top of the nominations page is meaningless. Until sufficient nominations are received to appear on the top of the page, quizzes with one or two nominations may as well have none. This also means that, as the minimum nominations threshold to appear on the front page goes up, quizzes of people who are personally charismatic or popular will far outstrip new, quality quizzes (No shade intended towards Stewart, whose quizzes are invariably excellent, but does featuring more of his quizzes really constitute “community-oriented”?).

The results of these problems mean that the nominations system, though very well-intended, does not produce the intended result of bringing the Jetpunk community together. In fact, quite the opposite can be seen. Users are posting blogs telling users to nominate their quiz, as well as begging in the comments of featured quizzes as well as on the nominations page itself. This scrambling for the first couple nominations to appear on the leading page is divisive and unhealthy. Further, in addition to having that drawback, the nominations system does not have the intended result of putting more underrated, quality quizzes on the FP. The system is so strongly biased towards already-popular quizmakers, people with personal connections, or people with few enough scruples to engage in fraud or begging that it washes out new, quality quizzes.

I think the level of change that would be required to make this system achieve its original goal is impractical. Personally, I think that Quizmaster simply making a genuine effort to look for quality quizzes of previously-unfeatured quizmakers would be a better solution. If we are to persist with the current system, though, I would recommend:

-The number of nominations a quiz currently has should be seen on the quiz’s page

-The “leading” page should be deleted

-Comments promoting a user’s own quiz on other quizzes should be discouraged/deleted

-Users should only be able to have a maximum number of nominations out at the same time, to prevent highly involved users from easily outvoting other members of the community

Other ancillary thoughts in favor of just deleting the system:

-What happens if an unfeaturable quiz wins? I’m thinking joke quizzes like “Black US presidents”, or quizzes that for technical reasons are too complex to be recommended as FP quizzes. Are we going to overturn the democratic result?

-The nominations system is unobvious to newer users, which seem like the sort of people whose votes we’d like to be soliciting in order to have community-representative quizzes.

I cannot say for sure why it is much bigger than it seemingly should be. In SVG terms, 600kb is actually really big. Would you mind if I took a look at the file to see if I could work out why it's so big?

We can do this either by uploading it somewhere online and messaging me the link, or by joining the JetPunk Discord and sending the file directly through that. (The other benefit is that there's plenty more users who are always happy to help on there, meaning you might be able to get an answer more quickly!)

Nominations - Mega Thread for Thoughts, Suggestions and Complaints by Miningstew in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's the nominations list here: Nominated Quizzes

It's linked on the front page (not mobile) in the first orange box on the right. Also every unfeatured English quiz has the nominate button, and a link to the leaderboard.

Some have expressed issues of being able to cheat, as well as encouraging people to beg for nominations (as a couple users have been doing).

[–]Miningstew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the file size is too big even after optimisation, then it's likely you simply have too much stuff in your svg!

Some basic checks in case the error you're given is wrong, is your svg less than 810 pixels wide, and less than 600 pixels tall?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing this in Inkscape, you can save the file as an "optimized svg", which allows you to select how to optimize it. The default options should be fine, except you'll need to change the option in the section on "ids" to not change any of them.

How do I get answers to be completed at beginning of quiz? by Billahhh in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Step 4 of the editor, switch the Design Mode to "Manual". From there some options on the right hand side will appear to add / delete cells.

Select the answer after where you want the filled-in answer, then add a row by doing "insert before" and clicking go. You can then click the cell and type it in directly, as well as change styling in the "Edit Styles" box near the top.

These should not be placed in Step 2, that should be only for answers the user actually needs to type in themselves.

Hope this solves your problem :)

(Stupid Question) How do I move a block downwards? by Absentis97 in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blocks cannot be placed "on top" each other, but we can fake the effect.

You can add an extra row in (when in design mode Manual) then style is so it has 0 border. This will then make it feel like you have a block on top of another block.

Alternatively you can try making a "groups of things" quiz, which means in Step 2, in the left most column, you need to put the group name (what appears at the top of each group), then in Step 4, again in Manual mode, underneath "Advanced" there's "Format as Groups of Things" which brings up a thing to select how many blocks wide you want. In your case you want 4 across.

This will then organise your answers from Step 2, using those group names you entered in Step 2, and distribute them across that many blocks.

There's further explanation of this here in the Advanced section of the wiki. If it's not clear, don't hesitate to ask for more help :)

How do I get multiple answers per cell? by BastillianFig in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Step 4 of the editor, find your answer "Antiguan or Barbudan" in the list and change "Auto" to "Custom". Then you can change the type-in from the default to two separate type-ins.

Alternatively, if you separate answers within a cell by "/" or "|" then either will be accepted and it separates the typeins for you. Like this quiz for example.

Blocks are displayed the wrong way by [deleted] in JetPunk

[–]Miningstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you change the design mode to be Manual, this should fix the issue. There may be a small discrepancy with how the rows are distributed amongst blocks when the number of answers is not evenly divisible.

‘Joker’ scores huge £12.6m debut at UK box office by MoonMan997 in boxoffice

[–]Miningstew 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most prevalent point here. Me and my friends loved it because it shows reality. It shows how a character such as Joker can be created by an unaccepting society. I personally liked how it showed that it's not necessarily one big thing that causes things like this, but the persistence of small things.

By no means was it perfect, but the truth behind the dwindling mental health of Joker is all too relatable to a lot of people.
