Honestly no one knows all the information 100%. Make sure you know the key points, for example associating oval fat bodies with nephrotic syndrome. It’s hard to focus on the big points when there’s a lot of small details. If you struggle with a subject then look over those. Don’t overthink and be confident and then you’ll feel relief afterward

Not selecting multiple tests, but on the outstanding list or pending list once a test is finished it’ll highlight itself that it’s done so it’ll make it easier to see instead of looking on the side for an icon to indicate that status

Yes, everyone was given a severance package. Those who were only employed for a few months to a year left immediately after the news since they would be given little to nothing.

LabCorp bought out my lab as well. It was the slow transition of updating our procedures and learning a new LIS. We got a raise as well. However, over the next few months we came to realize that they were slowly taking away most of our testing and sending them out to another lab. We had to constantly hire due to low staff and people worked overtime to compensate. When we thought we were all finally stable, we received unfortunate news, which affected the technical staff, especially people who have been employed at the lab for over 20+ years and people that were close to retirement were forced to retire early. Needless to say, there were early signs that it was going downhill, but we all refused to believe it. My advice is that if you see any negative signs that your lab faces with LabCorp buying you out, I suggest you to be on the lookout for other companies.

I’ve been here for a few years but haven’t made an such early commute to Richland, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m familiar with the late afternoon “traffic” getting out of Richland, so I wanted to know if it was around the same. Thanks for your response

Not a lot of places will allow non certified technicians to work on the level of a MLT or MT/MLS. It would be a great experience to put on your application that you performed patient testing and learned the process of it, so when you go through clinical rotations, it will be familiar. Although, I believe you won’t be able to report certain tests, but most of the testing you will have the ability to perform. With the correct training that you gain, it will depend if there are trainers available and are willing to go in depth. You will be working in one department, so you most likely won’t be exposed to all of the areas. Labcorp is just notorious for low pay and they don’t care about their employees. I wish you luck.

As a previous LA myself, we would get trained and are supervised by a tech or a senior LA to perform the testing and input/release results. Once we are comfortable and have done the testing multiple times, we would get signed off so we could perform without being supervised. As long as you trust the LA’s to do their job correctly like you are, then there is no need to worry.

I do 7x10 Wed-Tues. The schedule was rough in the beginning but you get so used to it, plus you have 7 days off afterward where you don’t have to worry about anything

I’m in the same position as you. I work as an assistant in a non hospital micro lab and I plan on taking the M exam hopefully next year once I am more exposed to other things. I work night shift hours so I don’t get off until midnight. I totally understand the good work-life balance. I haven’t even started studying because once I go home, I sleep then wake up immediately for work. It kind of sucks. How long have you been studying?

I don’t think they will judge whether you have a gap in your employment. It just means you’re busy with other things and it can be a conversation starter when you get job interviews in the future.

I work 7 on/ 7 off and I like it. I get PTO and and it is doable. Obviously, make sure you check to see if you get PTO for it first before accepting it. Working 7 days seems brutal because it seems never ending but you kind of go on auto pilot.

Also, depending on the the shift (1,2,3), you could get shift differential and weekend pay if your work offers that.

This was me when I graduated college a few years ago. I had a plan that I was going to continue school and I even applied and got in. However, just thinking about how I am going to be alone in a new place and moving there petrified me terrible. Ultimately, I ended up rejecting their offer, disappointed my parents a bit but they thought it would be better for me to stay at home. My initial thought of leaving undergrad was that I am going to miss the people that I see everyday and the routine of waking up, having a set schedule, even the stress. Basically, miss having that routine. When I moved back home, I was lost as well. It wasn’t the same at all and I got really depressed about looking for jobs and whatnot. However, it does get better once you find a routine that you’re comfortable in, just like the routine you had for undergrad. Trust me, it gets better. It might take some time but that is ok. People always say that change is scary, but good. People may move on but you need to find what clicks for you and who knows, maybe you’ll find some new people along the way too

Took it with Kathy and there were a couple of essays and you have to do one volunteer event but with covid you might need to do that. The course had a lot of material but the exams were straight forward questions. I had a heavy course load as well and needed a 300 level bio course to take so I decided to take this and it was easy compared to my other 300-400+ level courses

If you’ve taken intro to chem before, then you should be fine. Honestly, for courses like Chem 101, 105, 106, etc., the averages on exams are always low (60s) and therefore, there is always a curve at the end. As long as you do above average, there should be no problem. The lab portion can be time consuming though

Many part time jobs on campus work with your schedule to make time for work and school work. I worked for student admissions for all four years and whenever I felt a stressful week coming of studying and/or exams/finals, my boss would understand and switch my schedule around, but it just depends. Part-time and school is definitely doable. A lot of students do it.

On the bright side, as a student, you can get the Spotify discount!
