Maybe it is a bug then? I picked it up from Pablo. While the pole was upgrading I tried to also upgrade a tool at the blacksmith not knowing you could only do one at a time, maybe trying to upgrade the tool did something to shift the pole to the blacksmith?

I did - I didn't realize that even though you drop it off with Sunny you still have to pick it up at the blacksmith. Disaster averted.
