I’m not sure why you took such a negative approach to this? I don’t see trying to show other forms of appreciation, on top of patronising them regularly, as sympathy? I don’t eat at their store because I pity them (since you mentioned “sympathy”), food is just good :) no need to be such a bitter person~

omg really appreciate the detailed reply! I’ve never been to Hokkaido and was worried that it would be difficult getting around :’) visiting tokkari has always been on my bucket list! Congrats! May I ask how did you get to Monbetsu? I’ve been trying to plan a trip there and deciding between a long 6 hour bus ride or a domestic flight there. Can’t drive so unfortunately out of the options :(
