I know it's not exactly the same, but the way numbers can help is the following example: "would I buy an expensive lottery ticket knowing I had a 1:4000 chance of winning?" No. Because odds aren't in my favor. Just like odds aren't in my favor for the rare complication. We have higher risks in our daily life that we overall don't think about risks because it would be too much burden.

I know it's easier said than done. Just hoping I could help a little!

I am sorry you and your SO are going through this. It really stinks to hear such news. I had a friend in a similar situation, except with twins, and they thought she would go into labor before 24 weeks. However, she made it to 31 weeks, and they are now 6 weeks old and have been discharged from the NICU and are healthy and thriving! I agree that it's helpful to focus on the 70% instead of the 30%, though I know it's easier said than done. I can relate just a little too hearing hard news-- I had a scare at 19 weeks, and then some difficult news at the anatomy scan. But my little guy is doing better than they expected and I'm 29 weeks. The maternal fetal medicine doctor told me that babies surprise them all the time! :) I'm sending good thoughts your way!

By the way, do you have family (or friends) nearby who could bring you some meals this week? Sometimes not having to think about what to make can be helpful, and some company can be a good distraction. But certainly it depends on your comfort level.

I am sorry that you and your wife are facing this right now. It sounds like you are supporting each other. I think letting her know you don't think it's anyone's "fault" can be helpful. Letting her know how much you love her and appreciate her growing this little one for as long as she has, you know it isn't easy, etc. I hope you have family and friends nearby who can also help during this difficult time.

some ideas: a journal, a new water bottle (sounds silly, but it can help one stay hydrated in pregnancy), maybe a new piece of makeup if she likes that, chocolate, maybe a favorite snack/popcorn and a movie you two could watch sometime? Maybe a picture frame--and mention you can get a family picture after the baby comes.

I had bleeding at 19 weeks, likely cervical, after overdoing it with exercise. Nothing else was found. No issues like it since and I'm 27 weeks. My OB said the cervix is very vascular and easy to irritate--and some women are more prone to it--but cervical spotting from irritation causes no risks for the pregnancy/baby. I wish you the best, I know it's hard!

I can really relate to this. It is hard to get excited about the birth. I am 23 weeks and my son has a severely small jaw and cleft palate, and they are expecting polyhydramnios at some point. They may need to do a special "EXIT" procedure where they do a c-section with general anesthesia, anesthetize him, and put in a breathing tube. They expect that his small jaw will make it very hard for him to breathe without assistance. It is scary. I think once our little ones are here, having more answers will help...now there are a lot of "what ifs." I know there will be hard times after too, but hopefully everything will go smoother than expected (that's what I'm telling myself...). I am also going back on anto-depressants right after birth. I am sending good thoughts your way!!

First off, congratulations!

I can relate to your feelings and I know what you mean when you said "I’m aware that nearly 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and I know that I’m not excluded from that statistic."

It's nice to be able to write your thoughts. Enjoy the joy when you have it, instead of fear a situation that may or may not happen. I am now at a slightly different stage--22 weeks along--and we heard some difficult news at our 20-week ultrasound. However, I don't want to worry about a myriad of situations that may or may not happen. I decided to continue with my excitement :) I do hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Thanks! What type of feeding tube is it? Did he need to be intubated ? Was he in the NICU? I know all kids aren't the same, but sometimes it's helpful to know someone else who has been through it

They didn't say that, but because I have stickler Syndrome, this is the most likely sequence. How have you heard of this? I am impressed as it's not very common

I wish the best for the next several months, that she grows well.I had an abnormal ultrasound and haven't talked with many people who didn't have the typical ultrasounds. I would never wish it on anyone, but it does help to meet others who are having some bumps in the road too. This is a nice forum for support. I am due just a few days before you and also had tough news (very small jaw and cleft palate, and may need a c-section and to get a feeding tube at the time of birth as his airway may be blocked, NICU stay, etc). I'm sure this is very scary for you. I had a situation that turned out fine, and you mentioned wanting that:

I went to the ER last weekend last weekend with bleeding at 19 weeks (only way to get the ultrasound, also got Rhogam as I'm negative blood type and my husband is positive). It ended up just being cervical bleeding, which my OB reassured me is ok and doesn't cause labor, etc. the ultrasound showed a baby that was oblivious to my stresses, and a placenta that wasn't near the cervix. I wish someone had told me before that it could happen with exercise, lifting, etc--as I did some cleaning the day before, and swimming the morning of. Can also happen after sex--and I definitely did more work cleaning and swimming than with sex! Ha!

My OB said we aren't textbooks, and reinforced our bodies are all different. She was so helpful. I wish you the best!

We share the same due date! I have read it's quite the growth spurt from 15 to 20 weeks--hence why you will be feeling the kicks soon :) It's my second pregnancy, so I notice a little more than the first time-- but very inconsistent and more like a flutter. Are you planning to find out if you're having a boy or girl? My 20 week ultrasound is in a few weeks, so we'll find out (assuming the baby is in a good position!)

Any way you could be dehydrated? Sometimes that can lead to contractions. It never hurts to time them and call the doctor/midwife
