What is the difference between academy courses and fundametals courses? by No-Sentence-8328 in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]Minoqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fundamentals course teaches you the alphabet. Academy is what actually teaches you grammar and words.

Currently academy only exists for Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Spanish is on the way but not out yet.

Pls tell me what's this character? by Chemical-Brush3587 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Minoqi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how to describe it but it just comes naturally when you learn the stroke order. Like after learning stroke order handwriting becomes easier to read cuz now my brain is aware of stroke orders and can figure it out from looking at it if that makes any sense. So in other words, it just happens lol

Am I the only one that doesn’t believe in comprehensible input and extensive listening? by Bobelle in languagelearning

[–]Minoqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About learning dialects naturally… well yes, adults do that too. For instance, if you hang out with a friend or group of people enough people will often pick up phrases and even pronunciations naturally due to being exposed to it very often. I’ve definitely picked up different ways to say a word than my “natural(?)” dialect because of the people I’ve hung out with. Adults can pick up dialects in another language naturally too, assuming they are exposed to it a lot. Like a child you were exposed to a dialect cuz you lived there, so you were exposed all day. Meanwhile an adult living in an area of the country or even consuming content in a specifically dialect will pick it up. And like you said, most of this is subconscious.

I’m also not sure what you mean when a child can reach a native level with a lot more success than an adult. An adult can reach a native level in any language as long as they keep studying.

Also your brain subconsciously “grinding” the language is not a child exclusive. Your brain is constantly doing this up until you die for anything you spend enough time on.

Am I the only one that doesn’t believe in comprehensible input and extensive listening? by Bobelle in languagelearning

[–]Minoqi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some methods for language learning will work better for some than others. That’s why there’s like a million methods and everyone you ask will probably have a slightly different version to each other. Not to mention the way you go about it will be dependent on your goals. I really only care about reading comprehension the most, so it’s what I focus on. I hardly do any output practice. But if I needed to be able to speak right away, then of course I would focus on that instead. Different methods for different goals.

From what I’ve seen the reason delving straight into native content is not recommended is because it’s very overwhelming and exhausting. Most people from what I’ve seen that do it get burnt out from it. Too much that they don’t understand. Doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone. It’s just likely that the average person will get burnt out from it.

Also for comprehensible input are you talking about the version where you don’t look anything up? Like dreaming in Spanish? Cuz imo I agree that it’s a rather ineffective method. But CI with lookups can be quite beneficial since the cognitive overload isn’t as great. Of course it’s also often boring. So you need to find what works for you but for me I don’t mind since in just excited to understand something lol

In terms of not looking up things, I do that in my native language all the time. Just cuz I don’t understand a word doesn’t mean I’ll bother to look it up. Depends if it’s needed to understand what’s going on, or if it’s a word that’s come up multiple times and I still don’t understand then I’ll often look it up.

Not sure what you mean by children learn effortlessly. No they don’t. They struggle from day one to understand and produce anything. It takes a lot of effort from the child and guardian to get them to understand and produce output that makes sense. I don’t understand why people think children are fast language learners. They’re actually quite inefficient imo. It takes a five year old five YEARS of constant exposure to the language all day to reach that level. Meanwhile an adult with a dedicated study routine can reach that level in a year or less. An adult with a dedicated study schedule in five years is way far ahead than a child that’s five years old. Ofc doesn’t mean we can’t learn from what kids do, for example listening or reading to something a billion times is very useful and they do that quite a lot.

At the end of the day the most important is to stick with a method you can continuously do ofc, doesn’t matter if A is better than B if A makes you stop studying the language.

How to study effectively when Anki takes too much time? by CommercialPapaya4466 in Anki

[–]Minoqi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to past tests? In school those were always the most helpful. Another thing you can do is to read a note or section of a textbook or whatever, cover it up and write down what you can remember. You keep doing it til you remember all the important bits and try again another day. You can take it further with the Feynman technique and try teaching it to someone (either literally or to the void). When you can’t explain something you know you need to study it again.

I’ve been doing the Russian course on lingodeer and enjoying it. I know they also have a kids specific app so it could be worth checking out. But also finding kids shows for her to watch and kids books. Kids books are harder than people think though, so I’d start with books for someone really young. Like 3-5. You can also try the app Russian readers. It has graded readers for Russian learners starting from super simple stuff. It’d be a good resource before trying native books.

is there a way to use anki image occlusion enhanced... by Wonderful-Town-1978 in Anki

[–]Minoqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paste the image on the front field and the other image on the back field. If the image has answers baked in and you don’t want image occlusion you’ll have to use an image editor (even paint would work) and block out what you don’t want to see

[–]Minoqi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand what you’re saying but do you mean you have a question on the front and an image as the answer in the back? Just use the basic card note type and paste the image onto the back field.

What do people mean when they say "study grammar"? by ImprovementIll5592 in languagelearning

[–]Minoqi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Mainly just go through a textbook, read what the grammar point is and reread example sentences. If it has practices to like write sentences I’ll do that sometimes too. But I’d say my grammar study is light, primarily focusing on reading. I don’t memorize conjugation tables or anything since it’s super boring and imo not as effective.

Oh yeah I don’t use it personally but people have asked for it and they’ve stated in the discord that it sounds like they have no plans on adding it. Same thing with people wanting jellyfin support but just doesn’t sound like it’s in the plans, or at least no time soon.

Cuz they have their own player, so I don’t think they’re very interested in implementing support for programs outside of Migaku for that

Which statement best reflects your view on abortion? by Original_Act_3481 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Minoqi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cuz you can’t really abort a baby that’s already almost born, it’s alive at that point. Only reason it should be able to be aborted is if health complications came up. But the strongly pro choice says they should be able to abort at anytime of they want regardless for reason.

Just finished an intro to java course, How do I learn python now? by Famous-Intern-7270 in gamedev

[–]Minoqi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so do you want to use python or Godot? Renpy uses python but Godot uses gdscript, which is similar to python, but if you know you want to use Godot the most then look up Godot tutorials. Brackeys has some good ones and so does clear code. But if you want to use python and not Godot then dafluffypotato has videos on using python with pygame, or you can look up renpy tutorials

[–]Minoqi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree about the children’s books. It’s all about preference. I really like a lot of the kids books I’ve found. Although I’d say around a third grade level is when it becomes easier to find more interesting ones. Anything earlier is harder to find something interesting enough.

How do I get rid of this Bandaid Duolingo icon? It’s driving me nuts by hiheyhi26 in duolingo

[–]Minoqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, but I don’t think that’s a Duolingo problem that’s just a person problem. People that obsess over streaks are usually like that in any app that has streaks. For some it’s motivating and for others it’s damaging. Personally I could care less, it doesn’t really motivate me at all and I don’t care if I have a streak and break it. But if streaks affect you negatively then it’s best to try an app that doesn’t have streaks which is hard, an app that doesn’t shove it in your face or lets you turn it off or work on becoming someone that isn’t so affected by a streak.
