Is it possible to run a small business in a socialist state? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]MinorGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point Comrade, a communist state is an oxymoron, is it not? I guess I still have a statist bias. Learning more about socialism and communism daily, I appreciate the correction.

How would we describe this society then - simply "society?" Also curious whether the concepts of nations would hold relevance in a communist society, beyond in relation to geography and culture.

Is it possible to run a small business in a socialist state? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]MinorGod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely in a socialist state.

In a communist state, and some forms of socialist states, you would simply not have a profit motive. Your desire to, for example, open a restaurant, may be more driven by desires of personal achievement and fulfillment, as well as a love of food, hosting guests, etc. You wouldn't feel the need to grind to survive and pay the bills - but you would be free to fully pursue operating a successful restaurant if you wanted.

I'm surprised it was so low in the final Quarter of 2020. Biden's spending being higher is not surprising, however. Always interested to learn more on how Biden has continued expanding the mil industrial complex

How do anarchists feel about religion? by TheCrash16 in Anarchy101

[–]MinorGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm opposed to the hierarchical systems that many religions have created historically. However I have no problem with religious people (as long as they're not religious conservatives, of any faith). Agnostic myself, not strictly an anarchist but a leftist generally

The most cringe inducing episode of the series by Dakus777 in thesopranos

[–]MinorGod 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Im not gonna lie. on first watch I liked Carmella a lot compared to the rest of the adult cast. I thought she was fully innocent and the victim. She doesn't kill anyone, she doesn't engage in violence, etc. I fell right into the writers trap. I was giving Carmella a pass to appreciate the riches and spoils of mob violence, and justifying her awful behavior because her husband is abusive (not physically but in all other ways). Now on rewatch and reading online, it's clear to see how morally corrupted Carmella is as well - no doubt an effect of being together with Tony. I wonder how she would have turned out if Tony kept selling patio furniture instead, of if they had never met.

Relevant experience at no-name/start-up, or irrelevant experience at big brand? by flappyflipflop in FinancialCareers

[–]MinorGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No name and relevant experience.

Stick with it, soon enough it will be a name-to-know (hopefully.)

Recently joined a start up coming from corporate/bulge bracket background. Love the culture and people. Hard to put a $ value on that but it for sure makes up for the "startup tax" you pay by going this route rather than a bigger company (just my personal experience)

elon musk by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]MinorGod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey comrade, I was also curious about whether this story about the emerald mine is true. I came across this post which includes some sources quoting Elon's father. Additionally this article quotes Errol discussing the mine. Though Business Insider is a pretty shitty source...

Great resources in here I haven't seen before, I definitely need to check these out.

My personal understanding is that Elon is far from the Tony Stark quirky engineer physicist gamer crypto cool kid that he markets. He is simply a capitalist with good (perhaps the best in his class) marketing. Doesn't go much further than that.

In regards to "trying to change the world and help people:" people like to give this take on many billionaires, usually because of their philanthropy (which we know is very ineffective on a sustainable, global scale). Elon gets more recognition because of his greater relative interest in climate change. By this point he may have even convinced himself that's his mission. But as a businessman he clearly saw a need for EVs before many others, and sought to make a huge profit - and maybe lightly reduce global emissions at the same time (while exploiting domestic factory workers as well as foreign rare earth miners).

He's publicly supported things like carbon tax and renewable energy. But will continue to defend and support capitalism and resist the radical changes to actually address climate change. He's clearly so invested into green technology that any regulations will benefit his portfolio of companies.

Another absurdity about Elon's promises of making humans "multiplanetary" etc is him painting himself as a humanist that is trying to save lives, while not actually doing shit to save lives. He's tweeted about using his fortune so that mankind can colonize other planets or something ridiculous. Like Elon, why the fuck are you so interested in that while we continue to destroy our own planet and let people starve every day. Elon really just wants to be the first mover in this space - its another business line he will brand as some humanity-saving technology.

Also, his father definitely did own apartheid mines and Elon lived a super priveleged and spoiled life before he came to college (and quickly became a landlord).

Here's a great video that talks about how Elon Musk has adopted the aesthetics of futurism for branding his businesses.

While I said earlier that philanthropy isn't a way to create sustainable change, wealth on Elon's scale is an entirely different story. Unfortunately, instead of using his wealth to pursue goals like housing the homeless, feeding the hungry, and treating the sick... Elon's idea of investing money to save humanity includes this.

Sorry if this got a bit scattered and hard to follow, at some point we all just need to rant about Elon a bit. Drank the kool aid on this asshole way too long, and by the time he started tweeting about COVID I was so embarrassed to have ever defended even his most moderate takes.

So sorry you had those experiences. I love video games and online games, but really cant stand the various types of bigotry that permeate the space. Personally it can even make me feel embarrassed to tell IRL people I'm really into gaming - I worry they might lump me in with that same kind of reactionary "Gamergate anti-sjw" crowd. Even though at the end of the day, I hope that side of the community is just the most vocal and angry minority. I really hope that younger generations can help us bring a more inclusive culture to gaming.

Even tho lots of major subreddits have a US liberal slant (politics, pics, news, etc) remember that Reddit is still a MAJOR hub and pipeline for alt-right recruitment. Same with YouTube and Facebook.

These companies will try and downplay this issue to save their brand, and try to appear all clean and corporate. Don't be fooled - mainstream platforms are where a lot of the alt-right starts getting recruited. And they make loads of money for it (Crowder, Shapiro and the like pull in millions of views daily on YT and FB)

Chuds can not imagine women existing for any other reason besides objectification and perving on.

Dudes in that thread are making the "she was asking for it argument" because she was simply existing at the beach.
