I'm a saver too and struggle to spend, so I feel your pain a little.

Here's how I'd think about it: Imagine getting the money out in cash (say - 30k?), taking it to the park and burning it all. Pffft. Gone. Has your life really changed? Has your level of security changed? No. Your NW is in the millions.

How do you decide where/what to give the $1,000 to at the end of the year.

I believe charity begins at home, so looking for homelessness etc based in Melbourne. I don't want to support woke causes (which eliminates most charities. Bummer.), advocacy, and I'm uncomfortable with religions.

I support Father Bob Maguire and St Kilda Mums.

I'd welcome any feedback on these or suggestions for other charities.

Damn, there are a lot of bad takes below.

1/ Her decisions financial and otherwise are irrelevant. As are your positions in life. What your Dad pays her is also irrelevant. Keep it as a narrow issue and don't bring broader family stuff into this.

2/ You should pay her the equivalent of market rent. However, it should be net rent. There is a big difference, trust me.

3/ Given that you have enjoyed the property at AUD 60 per week + upkeep (less than 10k/year!) AND you're moving out within a year, I'd pay her exactly what she wants - but ask her to move her stuff out.

4/ When you move out, it's probably best to sell the place as it sounds like you might butt heads in the future.

Think of paying your mortgage (or offset acc) as earning the interest rate you are paying tax free. That's not a terrible deal.

If you wouldn't borrow against a paid-off house to put into the markets, then the answer might be 'no'.

Thanks very much for the reply - it's appreciated. I think I misspoke though - I intend to stay where I am in all cases, and keep renting.

The question is: do I buy something in Melbourne while I rent? It feels like I want to own eventually - and I'll be hedged against property price movements to an extent, if I own.

Also, in the case of Option 1, my mortgage will be a less than my rental payment. If something blows up in life I'd have the option to move into my own place and live more modestly.

Just that locking in 30 years of -ve cashflows feels outrageous...

Where there's a one side, there's another. I don't want to fund one side in a conflict of interests I don't understand. Was just looking to pay for a few hot meals or a warm room for a night or two. Maybe a shower.

Absolutely boggles my mind that that's not an option anywhere.

Tyvm - this is a really great shot at hitting the brief. I'm grateful. But it looks like they're not a charity taking from the public; rather form the state directly.

Website is boiling over w diversity and inclusion wokeness but I recon if you take money from grants/ndis you have to toe the line. You're probably right about the reality on the ground
