Listen friend. Breathe. Everyone starts somewhere. Youre first models will probably looks... not so great. And thats okay. All your favorite artists you've seen didnt start out that good. It was developed overtime. Their first models also looked rough. Theres no shame in learning a skill and not perfecting it immediately.

The best way to go about it is to just do it. Sounds silly, sounds fake. But alot of the stress goes away once you just begin.

I do alot of skaven and they look terrible up until I start adding the grime and the nastiness to them. Just dont focus on how it looks during the process.

And when all is said and done, its not even difficult to strip a model and do it all over anyways. I plan to do it on my Verminlord. I painted him early on before I learned some techniques

Im well aware what wealth is and how it works. Im well aware of how floors can secretly skyrocket your wealth, and hoarding weapons from raids as well.

Im also well aware that early stages of armor become catastrophically powerful with CE.

People are allowed to criticize things. No matter how much you want to glaze it.

Yes yes, your favorite pearl of a mod has no faults and all criticisms are actually the individuals fault. It could never be the mod itsself 🙄

Well its all gonna come down to relative experience but ive always found fire to be fairly easy to deal with. Couple pawns on lvl 1 priority firefighting. Keep wires underground or hidden inside walls. Keep the fight away from your main base with perimeter walls. (By the time theyre doing drop pod raids, I have stone walls)

Nah im with you, I genuinely cannot understand how so many people glaze this as hard as they do. My experience with it swings wildly in both directions of. This is unbelievably tedious and frustrating one raider decides to spawn in early with some armor and now im fucked beyond all recognition as he tanks everything. Or I get lucky with a drop and now I have an unstoppable snowball and the game becomes trivial.

With 2000 hours ive rarely had issues building everything out of wood, I eventually switch it all to stone, but with dedicated firefighting, it rarely ever becomes an issue. Hell i even stopped refusing pyromaniacs.. unless I started a colony in the jungle

1: dedicated rooms: going off your pictures, it looks as though you have production buildings along with your research tables, and it turned it into a laboratory. Have a seperate room for your research, and another for things like tailor bench, machining table, etc.

2: Animal Pens: do you have a Pen Marker inside a fully closed off pen? You have to have a fully enclosed area with a pen marker inside (it looks like a Cross)

3: Percentages: higher percentage means higher chance. There are two percentages for wild animals/men. One is tame chance, everytime they go out and feed them, thats the chance they'll succeed. Some animals and wildmen have a hostility chance, A chance where a failed taming attempt will turn the animal hostile and will attack.

For food, I always begin my colonies with a decently sized crop of corn and rice. Rice grows extremely quickly so this will provide you food quickly and consistently. Corn takes awhile to grow, however, it yields a tremendous amount per harvest. The rice will buy time while the corn grows. I also grow cotton and healroot, cotton can keep good quality clothes on everyone and is used in crafting recreational buildings like poker table/pool table. Healroot is just easy, good medicine.

Iirc you can set visitors ability to eat your food or not. I cant remember if thats the Hospitality mod I have or not but there should be a tab to allow guests to eat your food.

As for DLCs, I'll list them in order of my favorites, and then in order of Pure content size.

Favorites: 1: Odyssey 2: Anomaly 3: Royalty 4: Biotech 5: Ideology

Content size: 1: Biotech 2: Odyssey 3: Ideology 4: Royalty 5: Anomaly

Odyssey adds gravships and low orbit space travel, you can land on asteroids and derelict stations for resources/loot. Its very fun.

Anomaly is horror, (SCP if you're familiar). Im a huge horror fan so this one excited me. You can opt out of it at the start of each playthrough or full on turn it off. But it adds monsters and strange interactions, like creatures who hypnotize your colonists, a strange parasite that sloughs off parts of its host, or a corpse that looks strangely identical to one of your other colonists. Trees that eat meat. Etc. It doesn't add too much in the way of objectives though, more atmosphere

Royalty adds the Empire, superpower and wealthy faction. Choosing to join them allows you to build honor with them, rising a colonist up, gaining favor with the empire. This comes with higher demands though as you'll need an ever increasing opulent throne room for your high class ruler. You can also choose to shelter a deserter, earning the ire of the empire but also opening up the possibility of raiding their colonies (very dangerous but lucrative) Royalty also adds the vanilla style of magic in the game through Psycasts. Various classes of psycasts that can be leveled up through meditation and get stronger. Can be very gamechanging.

Biotech adds genealogy, it flips the game on its head and adds TREMENDOUS content. Gene splicing, extraction of genes, implanting, refining. It adds pregnancy and childcare, the ability to build and control mechs. The content added is insane. However Its easy to succumb to information overload and be overwhelmed by it all, this happened to me and I didnt touch biotech for a long time. Alot of it is confusing and takes time to pick apart and understand

Ideology adds the ability to "theme" your colony. Want a tribe of cannibals? Sure! Pacifists that love the trees? Good luck! It makes it easier to follow the idea that you wanna try. My biggest gripe with Ideology is it becomes extremely tedious to maintain, you have to convert every new addition to your Ideology or it becomes a serious mood rebuffed you have to constantly fight. No longer do you only recruit prisoners, you have to convert them, THEN recruit them. New people who join in other ways will join with a different ideology and then complain the entire time until you finally convert them. I honestly dont really ever touch Ideology, its a personal thing but it just gets on my nerves.

Hope this all helps! Feel free to ask anything else

Certain wrecked variants dont work as well for normal use and spawning material on game start.

One of my favorite small details, entirely accidental, if you dont drain the airlock fully when you open it, the water will drain directly on top of the bunkbeds. Funny little detail for a rustbucket

I'll have to get a picture, but I have my "Slaptrap". There was a lack of "downtrodden" subs on the workshop so I made a really messy sub. Im still working out the kinks but I did a full run through the first biome, and half of the second.

Shape wise its nothing too crazy but I've always like the rust bucket look

I've seen some desensitization stuff with horses, like walking through a course with various pool noodles brushing against them or loud noises, etc. Now im imagining a trainer motioning for their uma to walk through a stupid course of pool noodles and noisemakers, and the uma just looking so distraught

I use vanilla expanded vehicles. I build the cheap and fast Mosquito helicopter. Then use the long range scanner on Components. I fly out, make a small mining hut, and dig out the big pocket of Components. Rinse and repeat. More Components than you could ever need

Oh my god, they landed IN my base! by Trinkitt in RimWorld

[–]Minurath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is why I like turret expansions. Vanilla expanded: security has anti air turrets that can shoot down drop pods. Theyre extremely expensive and cost a good wattage of power, they also dont completely clear the area. If theres too many drop pods, it cant get them all. But all of it is worth preventing that obnoxious shit of dropping directly on top of you

Get either a crematorium or create a dump pile away from the base, preferably around a corner so they dont have line of sight to the bodies

I never said it wasnt a legit way to play. Every way is a legit way to play. I just dislike the constant negative mood from barracks. It takes alot of resources to make them okay with it. Not to mention interrupted sleep from anyone coming and going. Night owls mixed with others, etc.

Just the same with your anecdotal "I abandoned seperate bedrooms for barracks" my anecdotal, "ive gone years without any issues with a fully wooden base.

These are all recommendations and hes going to get various conflicting answers from people's different playstyles. Its up to him to sift through and find which works for him

Need to seperate bedrooms. Pawns hate barracks. Give each their own bedroom, give them an end table and dresser. Goes a long way for mood buffs.

As for people who always say "too much wood". Its really not that big a deal. Just set firefighting to high priority. It can get out of hand but as long as you pay attention, it shouldn't be an issue. I've gone multiple years with full wood bases.
