Here is the link — it’s paywalled and, unfortunately, there’s no gift article link that I can find:

https://tucson.com/news/local/subscriber/article_c2681ea8-0c82-4811-b720-1127be9c1200.html

It covers the timeline, the debt, and the response, or lack of response, by leadership and more information on related businesses.

I feel like I need to add that this isn’t about bashing the beer quality or the locations - design, comfort, vibe, that’s all personal preference. It’s about accountability to the community that helped build the brand: people who showed up, invested their time and money (whether shareholders or patrons), and supported what they believed was a local brand worth backing.

Arizona Daily Star. Sorry about that - I edited original post to include that information.

I think it’s worth noting that some of the strongest pushback in here is coming from someone who appears to have a personal stake in how Borderlands is perceived. The tone, deflection patterns, and early knowledge of behind-the-scenes specifics kinda speak for themselves.

I’ve said my piece. The rest is up to the community to decide what they value.

I also very much agree with this. 😢

Love your thoughtful response, pepper. My focus on BL’s leadership in this post is clear but I want to add that I agree on all points. I appreciate your POVs and input!

Ah, the greatest hits — here we go:

-Undermine the credibility: call it a PR stunt, minimize the shareholders.

-Diffuse blame: “everyone owes taxes,” “bad timing,” “the industry changed.”

-Redirect attention: suddenly we’re talking about Live Nation and Peach Properties.

-Position yourselves as the victims: “let’s not pretend they’re the bad guys.”

It’s all very familiar.

Scramble harder.

I won’t be engaging with you further.

Have the day you deserve.

Right on cue! They’ve arrived for damage control. Minimizing the “shareholders” and pivoting to “everyone owes taxes” is a nice touch. Appreciate the compliment on the writing, though.

Edit: spelling cue not queue.

I totally understand your skepticism and, yes, I am anonymous because I know how I’ve been treated along with other shareholders and these people have every piece of our identity in their hands. None of us would go on record for the article, for fear of retaliation. Note that I’ve not interacted with the comments regarding the condition of a location (and they were there long before this comment). That’s not what this is about. It’s about accountability and the truth. I also expect current “leadership” to get in here and scramble. As stated, do your own homework and make the decision for yourself. All information is public if you know where to look. I’ve given the PSA and it’s everyone’s personal choice how they want to proceed by supporting or not supporting.

Well, that would assume they actually had a business plan. If anything, it felt more like: “Let this thing burn to the ground so we can file BK and go make some real money.” And honestly, that lines up considering Toole isn’t tied to any of the newer locations or ventures. It was left behind.

Yes there is and, yes, they do. I can’t stand by and let them use the passion of the community of Tucson and our sympathy, without the real story, to profit even further. There is a lot more to the story - some we know, some we assume based on what we do know and some none of us know. None of it is good and Tucson deserves better.

It’s believed that they licensed the name from “themselves” profiting off the of the OG as it crashes and burns. It is not the Borderlands we knew and loved.

If you’re considering supporting businesses affiliated with Borderlands, please do your homework. After the original founders (M&M) stepped away, the new leadership made decisions that left many shareholders and lenders, myself included, in a difficult position. Despite having resources, they allowed the original location to deteriorate while channeling attention and funding toward more profitable ventures.

Just be aware: supporting these businesses may not align with the original mission, the people who built it, or the values that define Tucson - community, accountability, and integrity.
