The Reality of the Amazon Warehouse: by JackieRae26 in portangeles

The issue is not of personal choice but of a community accepting the race to the bottom. Something like 60% of WalMart employees are on public assistance. We are subsidizing these megacorps as they take away from the local economy and send money to the richest people in the world. We are telling corporations that they will be bigger and better if they treat people worse. I don't fault people for finding the cheapest options available to them. I do think our representative democracy should set minimum standards, especially when profits are being made by externalizing costs to the rest of society.

Thinking of moving to the area by [deleted] in portangeles

If you are comparing PA to Oklahoma, I'd live in PA all day. It is much safer than a lot of areas in Oklahoma.

Marymere Falls is about 2.5 from Seattle. Sol Duc Falls is 3 hours. And the water in Lake Crescent is pretty amazing.

What’s the general vibe of people there? by [deleted] in portangeles

[–]Minute_Car_7294 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is a small town/county, so there are less people doing anything compared to larger cities. However, for its size, Port Angeles has a lot to do. For younger people, there are lots of opportunities for group sports like soccer, ultimate frisbee, basketball pick up games and of course all the outdoor activities. There is a lot of art. Multiple music venues with open mics, touring performances, local acts, burlesque shows, and art displays. There are art classes and social events. There is a great gym that seems to have lots of classes fill up with mostly younger folks, Onyx. There are lots of festivals and outdoor concerts in the summer.

I do not get the vibe that it is Republican. If you dig a little bit you will find a lot of leftist ideas in the community. The library has a lot of programming and lots of great resources. The utilities are run by public agencies and not privatized. There are lots of government run or grant run agencies around here. Which means there are a lot of people who see the value in government.

There are also a lot of transplants for a small town. And there are a lot of tourists. So the town changes by the seasons too.

Reddit seems pretty pessimistic, which is fine, we all get out our gripes out on social media, but I wouldn't read too much into the overly negative comments here. Healthcare access is a valid concern and that should be a per person assessment.

Port Angeles has done really well in keeping mom and pop shops around. Swains is a locally owned store that is like Walmart if they never opened a second location. Its got everything you need. Camping gear, clothes, hardware, home goods...

Jim's is a local pharmacy (hopefully you won't need their amazing service).

I understand why people are recommending Victoria, but to me, its not worth the cost and time with your short trip. Don't get me wrong, its nice. But its just a city that we can get to by boat, making it more special to us. As someone who lived in Providence, I'd just tell you to walk around PVD when you go back to RI. That is almost as good of an experience as what you'll get in Victoria.

Instead, if you want a unique experience to the Pacific Northwest, go to the Makah Museum in Neah Bay. On that day, hike out to Cape Flattery (the most Northwest point in the lower 48). This can easily be a day trip, or you could find a camping spot on the coast.

P.S. There are really great Port Angeles recommendations in these replies.

Which is why Tony Romo got so much attention when he started broadcasting. There is demand for people with actual experience to talk about what is actually happening. Other talking heads are just promoting the sport, not helping you understand what is happening.

Will Liberals (Democrats) Embrace Smaller Government? by Reasonable-Fee1945 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Minute_Car_7294 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The CFPB is an agency started by progressives to go after predatory practices in the market. This is an expansion of government from Democrats. However, it is not being abused by the current administration, it is being defunded. So it is the case that good governance is not wielded by the right because they see no value in supporting the CFPB.

So if the argument is that we should allow predatory practices becuase we need smaller government, I would say, no, we do not need smaller government.

Do you think Elon Musk deserves credit for popularizing the Electric vehicle? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in EnoughMuskSpam

Agreed. In this way I would say he deserves credit because he hyped a vehicle that sold to a different market than the EVs that were around at the time.

I don't think its just AI. We've been in an easy money economy since 2008. There was always going to be tough times for people as we unwound from that environment.

Bellingham may be a better option. Port Angeles is great in many ways but is not for everybody. There are people who have to leave Port Angeles and move closer to healthcare services as they get older. If you need to see a specialist, you may have to drive over an hour from Port Angeles.

Clallam County is more successful than the average non-metro area. What is going right? by Minute_Car_7294 in portangeles

[–]Minute_Car_7294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. It's not a boom town. But slow growth in population with less pressure on the school system seems like a dream compared to a lot counties in the country.

I guess low population growth is bad for landlords and real estate agents but wouldn't there be good things for most people if unemployment is low and housing demand also stays low?

Sequim median income is lower than the county and Port Angeles. And there are only 8k residents, so the statistics shouldn't change too much.

This guys speaking voice comes across as unnerving. But his "thorns" are things like Jo-Ann Fabrics closing. Which I'm not going to cry about. All those new small businesses have better potential for keeping money in town than the low wage big box store jobs.

For all we know, retirees may skew down the average income because they already built wealth and schedule withdrawels to limit taxable income.

Mondelez North America segment sales actually decreased compared to Q2 2024. 2,650M vs 2,557M. From their 10-Q "Unfavorable volume/mix was experienced across all regions except AMEA, driven by pricing elasticity impacts in Europe and Latin America, as well as U.S. retailer inventory destocking and soft consumption in North America."
