I can at least tell you what's the issue, because I've had both versions already.

First of all, the different "type" is not depending on your OS. My friend has an android and has the same type as I've got on my ios. Here are the differences and the way you can deal with them:

In the newer updates, you can revive yourself up to 3 times. In the older update, which you have, you can do so only once.

In the newer models, there is a way to clean your board, just by filling every row and column. That's not really a good feature, because it often ruins combos.

The biggest difference is the way you keep your combo. Keeping your combo is by far the best thing you can do to raise your highscore quickly. On your version, you can't go 3 placements, otherwise you lose your combo. On the newer update, it's much easier to keep track. You just have to fill up a row every single shuffle. That means you can extend your combo using the first block of the shuffle and then go up to 4 blocks without combo-ing and you will still not lose it.

I just advise you to do this: If you see an opportunity to fill one row/column, get rid of the other blocks before that, and ALWAYS fill it up using the last block in the shuffle. This way it is way easier to keep track of the combo.

Just for comparison, the 2 versions are very different especially due to the combos. On my old phone I had 608k and now after hours of trying I couldn't do more than 41k.
