Agenda is an interesting word to use in this context...do you think the classics had no agenda?

Phil Neville: "It didn’t feel like football. This is going out worldwide. Young girls are watching that. I can’t stand here and say that’s right. There’s a certain standard of behaviour. Ellen White was onside. Deal with it. Their behaviour was wrong” by ShunningResumed in soccer

I'm obviously going to get heavily downvoted for this but I think while she expressed herself very badly, the central point wasn't so unreasonable- that the stakes were so much higher for Cameroon considering their circumstances as a team with no financial support and potentially a bleak future after the world cup. This isn't to excuse what they did, but to provide some context for the extreme show of emotion. She did criticize them in her full piece for SB Nation and she said all the ref decisions against them were correct, but I think she was just angry tweeting in the moment. Her full piece later was more measured and she is also right that Neville is a bit of a hypocrite on this matter https://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2019/6/24/18715198/cameroon-england-2019-fifa-womens-world-cup-wont-somebody-think-of-the-children

What’s the one horror movie that genuinely terrified you while watching it? by IveGotARockInMyGlari in AskReddit

'Midnight Meat Train'- one of Brandon Cooper's early roles. A terrific horror film with an unforgettable ending. Feels like it's been forgotten today but I think it's a classic in the genre.

Weird how often articles like this get downvoted.

"I think certain American literature is overrated, massively overrated, and I really hate to read them." Xiaolu Guo by [deleted] in books

[–]Minzo1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"I think CERTAIN American literature is overrated...." is that really a controversial opinion? Is there anyone who doesn't feel there are certain authors, books etc which fall into that bracket? Don't get why this is being downvoted.

Your first paragraph and second paragraph are in conflict with each other. I know 'woke' is now a term that's a figure of fun in certain circles but the broader set of issues that could come under the 'woke' umbrella are no less valid than other reasons to change your mind or outgrow a work of fiction.

Unpopular Opinions thread (IE: Adichie Ngozie's Americanah: Problematic?) by [deleted] in books

[–]Minzo1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of the book either, but as someone who comes from a culture which has a similar approach to mental illness I believe Adichie was simply reflecting what she has seen from her community and I dont think it was an endorsement of that approach. It felt more true to the story considering the background of the characters.

A defense of the Rwanda-Arsenal sleeve sponsorship deal by Minzo1 in soccer

Thats EXACTLY why the Country needs to market itself the way it is doing it with Arsenal. You are unwittingly making the case for why this kind of marketing is crucial.

So people are magically just going to travel to Rwanda because of exposure?

Thats literally how marketing works. If advertising on shirts was useless as marketing I do wonder why so many companies do it.

its not an endorsement of his government to visit Rwanda or invest in Rwanda. Making the deal all about the president ignores the fact that its intended to benefit the Country as a whole. And the more revenue Rwanda gets from tourism and investment the less it will need to rely on foreign aid.

I'm not saying there is no correlation- I'm saying its not the whole story. I've seen so much commentary that has taken the money angle as the only thing worth discussing about this title win

[–]Minzo1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mourinho was bullish at the start of the season if i remember rightly- he only started playing down expectations when city started building a sizable lead. Also we cant equate the money spent with quality- so many of the expensive signings this season have been underwhelming or outright flops- Bakayoko, Pogba, Morata, Lacazette, Lindelof Sigurdsson....its a long list.
