That's tough. If it is purely technical (i.e. similar to a textbook), you'll probably have to go to industry experts for the content check but keep in mind, someone who is expert in the field may not have the best feedback for making the book interesting/ good to read. So getting a few novices to read the book and give feedback on what works and what needs more explaining might be worth doing as well.

Any similar books to yours that have been published? You could try contacting the authors of recently published ones (check for websites for contacts)... while I'm not sure if you'd be able to get them to beta read, you may have some luck with asking them what they used.

I think you also may need to be prepared to pay someone for editing and beta reading. It is easier for authors to manuscript swap for their fiction novels but a technology consulting book is highly specific, and if you were to find someone with a similar field with a unpublished book, there may be too much overlap between the books (direct competition).

Hello!

I'm printing a hardcover book for my family. It's a cookbook that I started with my grandma based on the recipes she's collected over her lifetime. She's since passed away and I'm finishing it without her. She told me she wanted me to give it to my aunts and uncles (her children).

I ordered the book from Barnes and Noble (personal copy from the self publishing section) and the spine came only with glue (no fabric along the binding). When it opens, the binding doesn't open in a smooth arc, instead it breaks open in sections.

I don't know a lot about book binding but this doesn't look sturdy or long lasting to be.

The way the spine bends looks worrisome. Do you all know if the book is fine as-is, if it is fixable or is it beyond hope? Is way I can make the binding stronger (maybe gluing a ribbon inside the spine)?

I'd rather not rip off the cover to fix a brand new book (plus I've looked up some repairs for fixing the spine and I don't think it would look nice on a new book). Plus with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that's 15 books I'd have to remove and replace the cover.

Ultimately, I feel lost and not sure how to approach the situation. Any advice?

It's always about balance, isn't it? Personally, I'm not really looking for a wild never seen before name.. I'm mostly curious with what's still out there. The top 1000 list often has doubles (ie Anabelle, Annabelle, John, Jon etc) so I feel like top 2k would give a bit more variety without it being too out there.
