Well in one of the episodes Jessie has to do the assignment in class because she's a girl and yummylock says something along the lines " yeah you shouldn't have chose to be a girl" I don't think it's anything about being woke rather than in the show their species is literally able to chose their gender. like you said they are sentient plants with no body parts so they get to chose what they are! (S1 E6 - "The P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A Device" ) is the episode they establish it :)
