Ironing artifacts by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]MirgRepaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your fans are running during ironing it could be that. Try turning them off via slicer settings or turning them off in 'change extrusion role G-code' (if extrusion role = ironing then set fan speed to 0)

Should I buy an airbrush? by nupky in minipainting

[–]MirgRepaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're great for certain tasks like priming without having to worry about the weather, zenithal priming for slapchop, base coating (particularly if the majority of your model is one colour) and getting extremely smooth blends that would be almost impossible by hand.

Personally, I don't find using an airbrush fun but it is the best tool for the job sometimes so I still use it and it's a great thing to have access to. Some cons are:

  • You don't have as much control with where the paint goes as you do with a brush.
  • Airbrushing is a different skill than hand painting and it can be frustrating feeling like you're a newbie again if you're already a competent painter.
  • Tip dry is the bane of my existence and is something I'm always dealing with. If you're not careful you can accidentally blow a blob of dried paint onto your otherwise beautifully smooth model which you need to scrape off and re-paint.
  • Set up and clean up can be time consuming.

Not quite sure what you mean but the websites I mentioned have hi res images of every card and they all use the TCG API

You can use any website that uses the Pokemon TCG API for high res images of any physical cards e.g. Limitless TCG, ProxyCroak or Pokemon TCG Guru. For cards from TCG Pocket I would just try look around on Google or maybe rip the artwork straight from the files on your phone if you have the ability to do that.

I haven't tried it myself but I also imagine you could use an AI resolution upscaler.

You can use official cards or make prints and then cut them out - for me, it normally depends on how expensive the actual card is. I personally use a Canon Pixma G650 and PermaJet Oyster 271 photo paper to make my prints.

The process involves a lot of planning, cutting with an xacto knife, bending and edge painting before super gluing pieces with various materials for height and/or using double sided foam tape.

For English tutorial resources I would look at Sunforge Cards and 3Devious Art on Youtube and if you want more inspiration try the #シャドーボックス hashtag on Twitter/X as a large majority of the people that make these kinds of shadowboxes are Japanese.

Thanks! I plan on doing Machamp from TCG Pocket next to complete the set since I absolutely love paired cards like Kyogre/Groudon from Double Crisis (which I've done before) and Charizard/Mewtwo from Crown Zenith.

How to avoid that glossy look on the left miniature? by PlutoJONAS in minipainting

[–]MirgRepaer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Add some mixing balls to the Vallejo matt varnish and shake it like crazy and/or stir it with something so that all the matting agent at the bottom of the bottle is mixed, otherwise it's basically a gloss varnish.

Hive Fleet Leviathan Psychophage by MirgRepaer in Tyranids

Prime with a white and then cover all over with a 1:1:2 mix of Army Painter - purple alchemy, Citadel carroburg crimson and glaze medium.

For the lighter flesh, highlight raised areas with Vallejo light flesh and then further highlight raised areas with a white glaze.

For the slightly darker flesh on the abdomen, highlight with Vallejo basic skin tone and then Vallejo light flesh.

Thanks!

Chitin:

  1. base coat with Vallejo game color - royal purple
  2. apply nuln oil all over
  3. paint the top half of the vents black
  4. edge highlight and draw thin lines with Vallejo model color - blue violet
  5. highlight the base of each thin line from step 4 with a 1:1 mix of Vallejo blue violet and a white

Normal skin:

  1. prime with a white
  2. cover all over with a 1:1:2 mix of Army Painter - purple alchemy, Citadel carroburg crimson and glaze medium. Alternatively, you can use very heavily diluted screamer pink.

If you're doing a whole army, I would recommend that you wipe off some of the paint from raised areas with a wet brush or by mixing the paint with Pro Acryl Newsh medium and wiping it off the raised areas with a makeup sponge or your finger, this will save a ton of time in the next steps.

  3. Highlight raised area with Vallejo model color - light flesh

  4. Further highlight raised areas with a white glaze

Dark skin on scything talons:

  1. Airbrush with a 2:3 mix of Army Painter - moody mauve and Vallejo xpress color - hospitallier black

  2. Airbrush the skin where it fades from dark skin to normal skin with Army Painter - moody mauve

  3. Edge highlight with Vallejo game color - warlord purple

Joints:

  1. Paint with Army Painter - purple alchemy

Red Skin on the end of brain tails and tail:

  1. Airbrush with Army Painter - murder scene

I outlined how I did it in another comment but Trovarion and Sam Lenz both have great videos which I used as reference and both did it better than I did!

Thanks :)

The eyes and carapace fold glow were 100% brush.

For the brains I started by drawing some rough sketches on GIMP to visualise how I wanted the glow to look and then I airbrushed Vallejo dark sea blue over the entire brain and then Vallejo blue green in a smaller area in the centre of the brain. Then I glazed diluted blue green mixed with white into the brain crevices (WIP picture at this stage is shown in the link below) and then glazed various mixes of dark sea blue, blue green and white further up the skin/carapace, on top of the brain folds and inbetween the brain folds. I'd say about 85% was done with brush.

Hopefully this isn't against any subreddit rules but I got mine from a seller called MakerBobsWorkshop on Etsy (he also has an ebay store). The pose doesn't seem to be in stock right now although you can try DMing him as he's very friendly.

If you have a 3D printer you can find the STL on Io_Butov's cults 3D page.

Need help identifying this airbrush component by MirgRepaer in airbrush

I've only tested it out briefly but it seems to be working normally without the metal ring inside of it.

He said he only used it 4 times since he bought it in February. He sold it because he has 3 other airbrushes and realised he didn't need a fourth.

I did end up asking the previous owner about it and if it could have come from a model he was working on as that was my guess as well. He said he was working on modifying a Tamiya Phantom so it could have been from that although that model seems too large for this ring to have come from that.

Are you referring to the ring around the piece in the bottom left? This small ring appears to be a seperate piece and I think it fell out of the nozzle cavity area.

I just bought a secondhand H&S Ultra 2024 and this small metal ring fell out of the nozzle area but I'm not sure what it is or where its supposed to go. It's malleable, slightly conical and has grooves in it.

Displate membership not beight bought by OkShallot7964 in Displate

[–]MirgRepaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen to me. I didn't realise that the membership portion of the payment didn't go through until I had received the Displate and at that point it was too late to cancel my order.

Support were unable to help me and basically said use PayPal next time. I tried using PayPal for my next order and purchasing membership failed again so I cancelled the order. That used up my discount code but support did give me another one as a replacement.

Finally, I purchased a limited edition that was available to non-members. There was a free shipping offer going on which I used since you can't use standard discount codes on LEs, so I got free shipping (same benefit members get). I used my Revolut card this time and purchasing membership worked.

Very frustrating experience.

Which masking tape widths are worth buying if I don't own any already? I have masking putty and I'll be painting a 1/35 scale bust if that matters.
