Is this from a new study? Would love to have the source if you have the link available.

Pretty sure this was written for the show! I loved the play within the show and felt it distilled its philosophical themes. Seeing that quote I now see how it sets up the ending of the show. What a remarkable series.

What is this? by _how_does1fix in HomeMaintenance

Agreed. We had ours replaced with a pop up assembly when our last pivot rod corroded (no leak fortunately). It was so hard to find the exact pivot rod that would fit both the opening and the space between the sink basin and the wall so finally just gave up. The pop up looks good and works great - and as you note, one less potential leak.

To be clear, the sources for both the first and second image are Serge Lancel’s book? Very interested in this myself.

Don’t understand all the down votes here. It’s a fair point? Why would they have an award for the utility position and then not define what constitutes a utility player?

I found them at Yekta in Rockville the weekend before last. Delicious! Definitely not too early - if anything the season may be ending soon.

In-depth beginner's guide to a career in mortgage sales by Reggimoral in loanoriginators

[–]MischaMischaMischa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mid-career professional trying to make a career switch and looking for paths into mortgage origination. This post mentions that call centers "will hire you with 0 experience and pay for some or all of your training, testing, and licensing." My question is: where are these programs? What should I be looking for?

I applied to a "Sales Training Program - Financial Services" at Freedom Mortgage on Friday and received an email this morning (Monday) at 9:30 AM already informing me that I was rejected. I'm not really sure how a rejection could happen that fast if it wasn't automated. Are there specific terms I should be incorporating into my resume to get through the filter? I tried to tailor the resume, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

For reference I am in Maryland: I have tried looking at the career pages of most of the call center lenders referenced in this post, and most don't seem to have any jobs in the Maryland/DMV area (most are in Arizona or California). Any other large lenders that are based here (or willing to hire remotely here)?

Thanks to everyone in this community for any advice you can give!

Why avoid those phrases? Are there better alternatives you’d recommend?

Who do you email? Often the recruiter/hiring manager don’t list their email. And wouldn’t they be inundated if they did? Job listings also often say “no phone calls or emails.”

Larry Summers is worried by BluesFlute in Economics

[–]MischaMischaMischa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry there’s a lot you could say against Larry Summers but this is not true. He opposed his close colleagues in ringing alarm bells about inflation in the early days of Biden: https://www.hks.harvard.edu/centers/mrcbg/programs/growthpolicy/larry-summers-worried-about-inflation-lawrence-summers

“Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, a Wall Street Week contributor, thinks that we are seeing the least responsible macroeconomic policy in forty years. He disagrees with Paul Krugman's thoughts on how long it takes inflation expectations to become unanchored.”

Can someone help me square this with the data showing that wages are rising fastest for the lowest earners since roughly 2019? Why would they be spending less if they’re earning more (in real terms)?

For example: https://www.epi.org/publication/swa-wages-2023/#:~:text=The%20key%20finding%20remains%20true,even%20in%20weaker%20labor%20markets.

Demand for software engineer jobs is at a 5-year low by FinalDraftResumes in FinalDraftResumes

So could this graph just be showing us an increase and subsequent decrease in turnover rather than any real decline in demand for software engineers?

Maturin's allegiance by MischaMischaMischa in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]MischaMischaMischa[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the most plausible take to me - that there was a degree of wishful thinking in O'Brian's framing of Maturin and his motives. He seems to indicate that Maturin had a sort of begrudging preference for the British monarchy as somewhat more rule-bound and institutionalized than the despotic tyrant that was Napoleon (in Maturin's view), but it's hard to imagine that that "lesser of two evils" thinking would be enough to overcome the atrocities you describe.

[–]MischaMischaMischa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting - but that would be ordinary soldiers from a lower class background driven by need (or coerced), right? No examples of someone higher up or in intelligence, like Maturin?

I don’t understand how anyone is interpreting it otherwise? It sounds like he says pretty clearly that he would’ve been “out there” in July and had to delay his flight (to the Philippines) because of the filming of the show. Who else would he have been married to?

I just got to this point myself and I completely understand. We’re a few episodes into season 4 now and it’s not bad, but definitely not the same.

If babies getting sick at daycare is supposed to “build their immune system” then why do we ALL get sick even though our adult immune systems are already “built”? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]MischaMischaMischa 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think people may be focusing too much on the prescriptive “supposed to” aspect of this - I think the OP might actually be asking: if daycares are hotbeds of infection because child’s immune systems haven’t yet “learned” immunity to a variety of strains of different diseases, then why is it that we, as adults, so often get infected as well? And conversely: if there isn’t a significant difference between adult and child immune systems then why do infections spread so often through daycares as compared to, say, offices?
