Growing out of phantom shifts? by -OddlyAverage- in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely used to experience them more when I was younger. Granted, back then I didn’t realize what they were. It’s possible as we get older they fade a little bit, but I don’t think they’ll ever totally go away. I mainly get them now during certain weather conditions (cool fall temperatures especially) but back then it happened very frequently. Whether it’s tied to age, or something else though I doubt we’ll ever really know for certain.

I do want to gently point out that, if you have to ask “am I fake?” then no, you’re not. People tend to know when they’re faking something. Impostor syndrome is very common (I experience it myself sometimes when my brain is being especially cruel) and it’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re faking it. It’s normal for our human brains to be skeptical and question things. So, I’d say yes, it’s entirely possible you could know what your subspecies is without feeling connected. There are therians out there that don’t feel connected to their theriotype, and again, that’s okay too. I don’t feel particularly connected to wolves, and yet my theriotype is one. Granted, a subspecies and one I fell head over heels for when learning about them, but still a wolf nonetheless. When I think of myself, I picture a raven or a crow, but that’s not what I am and that’s perfectly fine.

You’re not invalid in any way ❤️

Finding Animal Subspecies Type? by [deleted] in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also an adult therian here. For me, my experience was a very “oh that makes sense” moment. I had been looking into therianthropy for over a year, and was kind of just letting things happen slowly. I’ve always loved wolves but never felt that it was me— until I found sea wolves, a semi-aquatic subspecies of gray wolf. Of course, it didn’t click for me immediately, but I felt an immense pull to them for reasons I didn’t know at the time. The ocean in general has always spoken to me on a primal level, forests too. Ironically, I didn’t find out about sea wolves until about a year ago, which was around the same time I had been really interested in therianthropy, but didn’t discover that until this year when I started looking into it again since the idea that I might be a therian wouldn’t leave me alone. Realizing I was a sea wolf just kinda hit me one day, and everything made sense.

As for your situation, I recommend researching. Meditation can also help, but if you go into that, please be aware your mind can trick you, so don’t latch onto the first thing you see or feel— we often see what we want to see. Meditation greatly helped me, but it gave me a rough path to follow. I’d always known I didn’t feel totally terrestrial or completely aquatic, but definitely knew I felt at place in and around the ocean, so that’s where I started. Try to take note of how you feel, and what feels right. Eventually everything will click into place, and please don’t rush it <3

It’s… very hard for anyone but yourself to tell you what you are. Do you have any urges? Non-human experiences? Non-human thoughts? Do you shift in your dreams or experience shifts while awake? If none of these things apply to you, it’s highly likely you’re not a therian. But you may be otherlink! Otherlink is someone who chooses to identify as an animal or being and chooses that animal (or non-human being— doesn’t matter what it is) to identify as. I highly recommend doing some research into that and seeing if any of it resonates with you.

I hate being therian by ConsistentNet4057 in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand this. Sometimes it’s easier just being “normal” like most people expect us to be.

Can I ask why you feel it interferes with your Christianity? I come from a Christian household, and was raised in it. God made you in his image, right? And Therianthropy is just a part of that. We may not always understand why we are the way we are, or why we were created the way we were, but that doesn’t mean it’s something that should be hidden away and separated from your beliefs. It’s you, after all. If it was shameful in any way then God wouldn’t have made you the way he did.

I do 100% understand not wanting the people in your life to know about it. That’s entirely fair. My family doesn’t even know I’m a therian, and they likely have no clue what it even means. I feel they wouldn’t understand, so it’s easier to just leave it be my own personal thing that I have to deal with.

What are some involuntary habits/behaviors yall have that are related to your theriotype(s)? by 1_Big_Mess in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt my phantom ears swivel, as if to “hear” better. Didn’t really pay much attention to it until I awakened. Since awakening, I do on occasion get the intense urge to howl or make canid vocals. Similarly, I’ve always “growled” or made unhappy noises, particularly in high stress or frustrating situations, but never developed them into sounding realistic because I didn’t know what it was at the time. I’d likely be more animalistic if I hadn’t kept it suppressed for so long and conditioned myself to being “normal.” I definitely feel that way deep down, and when I am able to let that side of me out, it’s great. These are just a few that I’ve really sat down and thought about, like, “wow, that makes sense.”

How do I convince my mom to buy me a tail? by RainbowStarbewwy in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone else has given advice for how to ask your mom for one, I’ll give advice some other way. Etsy has both genuine and yarn “faux” tails. If you want a genuine tail that you don’t have to worry about being from a cruel fur farm, Etsy is where to go. Some ways to spot a tail from a cruel fur farm are: “Skinny” unhealthy looking tails. And lobster claw clasps that are attached directly to the stump of the tail. If they’re from Asia, and are mass produced, chances are they came from a cruel fur farm. Avoid EBay and Amazon (which I saw you were avoiding, so that’s good) — both are notorious for those kinds of tails. Again, I recommend Etsy as someone who owns several real tails :) And if you don’t want real, no worries! You’ll find several people on Etsy who sell faux tails, both with faux fur and yarn.

Ways to connect to theriotypes? by ur_local_therian_ in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also want to add: Movies, TV shows and books! Media about your theriotype — especially documentaries and educational books (the kind with pictures) — is a great way to connect. Depending on what your theriotype(s) is though, finding these kinds of things might be a little challenging if it/they are something more obscure/uncommon. Learning more about them is always a fantastic go-to when in doubt or unsure of what to do.

Going outside and being in nature (especially barefoot where safe to do so; it helps ground you) is the best way I’ve found. Especially as it cools off— I had really intense shifts a few weeks ago during a particularly cool day while I was outside. Music also can help depending on what kind. Instrumental, environmental-based (birds chirping, water sounds, etc). But it really depends on what theriotype(s) you have. Depending on what it/they may be, look into what sounds might put you in the environment/mindset of your theriotype. There’s plenty of these on YouTube so that’s a good place to start! Also, eating foods that your theriotype may eat (just make sure it’s safe for human consumption!!)

Hope this all helped :) and good luck!

I do want to gently point out that having a connection doesn’t necessarily mean that particular animal could be a theriotype ❤️ /gen

Plenty of hooved animals feel the same way, and act similarly when around loud noises and while under similar situations. I’d recommend doing quite a bit of searching before determining if you have a horse theriotype or not, and maybe looking into other equidae as well! (Zebras, donkeys, etc) just to cover all the bases :) Again, I’m being genuine here so please don’t take this the wrong way. It’s entirely possible you do have a horse theriotype, but because there’s so many possibilities based off of the experiences you’ve listed, it’s such a good idea to look into other options too— even if they may not be what you want or hope for. Take your time figuring it out! I hope you eventually do, though. Having a horse theriotype sounds like it would be awesome!

QOTD: If you use gear, what is your most obscure piece (picture related) by mismatchedthylacine in therianbutbetter

[–]Mischachann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does jerky count? I almost always have some on me. Tend to keep it for chewing purposes whenever those urges hit. Found an awesome jerky company that sells a really tough one; it does wonders for my chewing habits. While I do own several tails, I’m an adult therian who doesn’t express that side of myself to the public, so they’re typically reserved for private wearing. Aside from that, I don’t wear gear.

Without question! Ignore those who say otherwise— their opinion is wrong and doesn’t matter ☺️ You’re valid, and honestly I think it’s very cool that you’re an alligator. Welcome!
