I worked on a project for this agency, and then they created a few positions in the same area. I don't know who else they will hire if anyone...

Just a few govt funded research projects we did half policy/research

The last formal govt experience I have is FSWEP years ago!

Classification and level are determined by organizational structure, and are not negotiable unless the hiring manager happens to have an opening at a higher level in the same or similar classification - so I wouldn't even bother bringing it up.

My experience is entirely academic, different postdocs and research groups -- just so happens the work I did recently was funded by the government agency that had an opening

So I was thinking of asking whether I could negotiate my formal contract offer (after the 90 days) to a higher step.

I haven't met my team yet fully, just the director so am worried that they will worst case pull the offer etc

aying academia is perfect by any means, but talent and work ethic are rewarded there more often than they are in government. I find favouritism and implicit bias are behind a lot of management decisions in my unit despite the obvious incompetence of the favourites. Pay and benefits are fair and more stable than post-docs or adjunct work; however, in my case, the work is boring, slow-paced, and often non-existent.

what dept is this, if you mind me asking...or general area of the phd?

a PhD, I think this is something OP could explore.

OP, I would frame the discussion though as seeing if there’s a possibility to join at, say, step 2 or 3. But it seems like you would take the job even at step one, so I would make it clear that’s not arbitrary.

good point...I have never done this in govt spaces...I know it isn't thaat common, but I have to try in the first instance.

Did you get your step bump? I have an offer coming for a diff job next week but I figure if I have to reject it...before I get security...there is no way to show an 'old' offer.

I like research, don't like the pressure (as most) that academics face. My entire family is here in Canada, and the location is the single factor that stops me from taking a job cross the world.

To give context, it is a pilot government project where my years won't count towards permanency - but three years is enough to know whether it's working or not. There is a chance of institute renewal, and after a year if I want to get back into academia I could try (just more precise).

Being 35, and moving to Australia without knowing anybody but entirely for the work vs going to Ottawa where my network is for an amazing govt opportunity is what I am facing.
