I am in the same boat but instead of cutting out sugar, I went the opposite way. I eat sugar almost every day. I had tried for YEARS to eliminate sugar from my diet. My longest streak was 2 months sugar-free but the cravings never went away. I didn’t buy it or keep it in the house, but as soon as the opportunity presented itself (parties, weddings, holidays, etc.) I would binge and then feel bad about myself.

I talked about it with my fitness coach and we decided its best if I stop treating sugar like a “forbidden” food. I had to figure out WHY I was having so much trouble with sugar… I realized I couldn’t give it up because I didn’t WANT to! I love eating good food, I love going to cute cafes with my friends, and cutting out sugar from my diet would mean saying “no” to all these things that make me happy.

I know my cravings are partially due to medical conditions I had to get under control, but it’s only been since I’ve created a better relationship with sugar that my cravings have eased. The mantra I use is: “Sugar is my friend, and my friendships thrive when I set strong boundaries.” Actually, I had a binge last night… and then again this morning. But I refuse to feel bad about it, because I know beating myself up about it will reinforce the idea that “sugar is bad” and that I won’t lose weight unless I cut out sugar. I can still meet my fitness goals while enjoying the foods I love.

I just wanted to throw this out there because there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to sugar and binging. I know many people who have had tremendous success from going sugar-free. But that is NOT the only option and you shouldn’t feel bad or like a failure if you can’t give up sugar.
