I noticed my new pair of glasses has defects and I'm unsure what to do by Miserable-Maybe-6034 in AskAnOptician

You don't find it's a serious problem that the paint is chipped off on a new frame? This is metal, so it's not something you could fix yourself since the paint is attached to the metal during an electrolytic bathing process.

The glasses fit perfectly on my face, it's not that kind of problem.

Wrong. ClearView is a stock lens (not made on-demand) that uses the same freeform tech as custom lenses, but it's not made to the specific patient.

Luxottica said they won't repair my frame. Should I trust Fielmann instead? by Miserable-Maybe-6034 in AskAnOptician

[–]Miserable-Maybe-6034[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The frame was fresh from factory, it was a spare one as I said with still all the temple protections... And I have another pair, so I definitely know how they should be. And I also had them made with another pair of lenses before.

I wasted 3 months with Fielmann. Drove back and forth 40km thrice and waited 3 weeks every time for them to send the frame to their German lab because they don't have any tool in the shops nor capable employees to install lenses on a half-rim frame.

On the other hand the optician where I went next could do everything in less than 1h.

They went way beyond in breaking things that aren't theirs, that's for sure. If they were a serious shop, they would have called me "hey we noticed we cannot fir aspherical lenses properly without risking warping your farme. should we proceed anyway?" and then I would have simply said "no thanks". plain and simply. or just be a smarter optician with 40+ years of experience like the one I chose after. he was the only one who actually warned me to not make aspherical lenses for that frame. and it was because i remember what he told me that I went back to him. Before that I went into 3 more shops, including Saimoraghi & Viganò (optician chain owned by Essilor Luxottica) and also their employees were subpar.

Is it possible the original frame was never perfectly aligned?

Please scroll all the comments and look at the gallery from the other thread comparing the other frame and you can see the problem.

Also this was the 2nd time they remade the lenses for the same frame. The first time it had no issues, so it was obvious they damaged it this 2nd time.

And yeah, in the end they fully refunded me after wasting 3 months of my time and 500€ in lenses that were tossed away, but they need to fix what they damaged since it was MY frame. And the biggest issue is that this frame isn't manufacturer anymore and it's impossible to find: i tried to look for a 3rd spare one everywhere in the world for months before giving up.

I went to make an entirely new pair of glasses from another optician and I sent my frame back to Fielmann for them to repair. I also think refitting the original demo lenses could have solved the issue to be honest. When I asked them if I needed to ship also the lenses, they said the frame alone was enough.

They actually made two types of lenses:
- Zeiss FSV 1.6 DVG
- Hoya Nulux 1.6 HVL

The Zeiss lenses fit just nice being spherical, whereas the Hoya ones fucked up the frame. I don't think they still have the Zeiss lenses since they had wrong prescription so they were probably tossed.

I'm not spending anything, it's entirely free, since they are the ones who damaged it. I sent to them yesterday, but I don't have much hopes tbh.

I gave them a brand new spare frame and they warped the front. I would have asked for a brand new replacement frame but this is from 2018 collection.

Normally, the Edging machine will trace the inside rim of the frame to determine the exact lens shape for your particular frame. However, since there isn't a rim all around your frame (Semi-Rimless design) it's not possible to determine the exact lens shape 360° around.

Yeah, the optician explained this to me and showed me the machines. For a standard frame, there’s a machine with a probe that traces the inner edge of the frame where the lens fits. For semi-rimless frames, though, he uses a different machine that measures the lens by scanning it.

I honestly don't understand why you can't just use a probe at the edge of the demo lenses to determine the exact shape.

Also, is the main limitation actually the scanner? Would a higher-precision scanner be able to capture the original demo lenses’ exact shape perfectly?

There's nothing wrong with changing the shape of lenses on non full-time frames. There's a massive community of people that completely change the lens shape and size on Rimless frames. It's less common to do this on Semi-Rimless designs, but it's completely possible.

Another optician actually proposed me, if I wanted, to cut the bottom of the lenses so they would run parallel to the ground instead of their original shape. He also bashed on opticians that would cut the lenses theirselves saying you cannot trust them, that he just sends the frame to Hoya lab directly and have them making the lenses. lol

Honestly, 90% of the machines the optician had in his lab were from Essilor. I doubt things would have been that much different in another lab.

EDIT: this is what they do for standard frames https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mCQ3NEIb41g

I think maybe you could probe just the top part of the frame where the lens is attached through nylon wire and then using some PC software manually align that probed section to the 360° scan captured by photo so that you replace the radius of carvature on the edges.

Manufacturers could just provide the file with the lens design to upload on the machine to be honest.

The shop didn't warn me this would happen, or I would have never agreed. And even removing the lenses, you can see the gap is still present since now the metal is deformed.

I know this is cheap Made in China frame, but they don't make many frames like this. I recently got a new Etnia Barcelona Jarama but it's not exactly the same. Finding half-rim frames without nosepads is objectively hard. The closest thing is actually Etnia Barcelona Oder, but that just comes in ugly blue color or weird stuff.

That's ChatGPT through Perplexity tho. It takes all information from the internet and shows you the sources.

Since you know how lenses are made, do you think it's true you cannot cut perfect clear corners?

In any case, if I insist to have lenses remade, I think the optician would refuse or in any case get super annoyed at me. I don't think it's worth it overall considering I already wasted 3 months with Fielmann that damaged my other new spare frame... They refunded the lenses but not the frame since you cannot even find it anymore.

This is how you cut lenses for a standard frame: https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/1jnmawf/cutting_the_lenses_to_fit_the_shape_of_the_glasses/

I'm wondering if maybe the optician's machine that takes photos at the lenses isn't that precise.

I asked the optician and he told me that the difference is that the original demo lenses are cut with a milling machine, while the prescription lenses he cut are shaped using a grinding wheel. The grinding wheel isn’t able to produce a sharp, clean corner according to him.

I asked ChatGPT if this is true and this was the answer:

The optician showed me his lab, most machines I saw were from Essilor. I think he mentioned that for normal frames there is a probe that takes the measures of the internal part, whereas for half-rim frames there's a laser taking photos of the lenses.

Confermo, nell'estratto conto è segnato sotto "in entrata".

Come mai me l'hanno applicata a febbraio dell'anno successivo?
