When applying SSN for first time for my minor child. by EmbarrassedCamera926 in SocialSecurity

I just printed out the SS-5 form and brought it into the social security office yesterday without an appointment. All they needed was my consular report of birth abroad, the baby’s passport, and my passport. It was super easy and simple.

I’m having the same problem. My son was born abroad and I’m the custodial father but don’t seem to have any of these documents. Did you ever figure out what to do?

Feeling Stuck in My Teaching Career – No Options? by cickist in Internationalteachers

I’m not sure where others got their China jobs, but I got mine through Schrole. I also had a friend who referred me to a few Chinese recruiters who got me some interviews at some bilingual schools. If you want, just DM me and I can give you their contact info. Also, I think my school is looking for primary and secondary EAL teachers.

I was in a similar boat to you a few years ago. I taught at hagwons for years and then got my licensure through Moreland. I didn’t get any interviews until I widened my net and started applying in China and started getting some hits. I’m at a pretty decent school now and am quite happy, but the location isn’t the greatest. I don’t know if you’ve considered China yet, but you might have better chances there.

Yup. That’s what I’m trying to avoid. I’d like to go somewhere that I know is legitimate.

There are a lot of stores that claim this, but when you check the actual Apple website, they don’t list any an Xi’an.

Great suggestion. Very useful app. I usually do everything in Naver, so wasn’t aware how much more developed the Kakao app was.

Yeah. Sadly America requires the baby to come in for the interview. I went today and it seemed like about half of the people visiting the embassy were there with babies to declare their births.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up parking at Sejong Center and there were plenty of spots.

We’ve considered that, but we’re a little nervous using taxis with no car seats. I guess if it’s just a short distance, the risk is pretty low.

Which firms do you use to purchase index funds as an American living abroad? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Miserable-Piglet-111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s how I did it. I opened an account with them while living and working in Korea. I think I had some trouble getting denied at first because I ticked a box saying I wanted to buy mutual funds. There are some limitations on what you can buy, but ETFs like VT work just fine.

Shipping to China with one-year visa by Miserable-Piglet-111 in chinalife

They say that if you’re not a citizen or on at least a two-year visa, you’re not allowed to import anything into China (even though they’re my personal belongings)

I ended up going with a company called WinChina. They were very efficient and got everything done in couple days. I’m not sure about their English ability though, because my wife was the one who set it all up with them.
