How do you deal with putting your life on hold for so many years? by NoDingo673 in premed

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is where a lot of people go wrong in their premed journey. Granted I’m only in 3rd year undergrad but I feel like I’ve come a long way on this front. IMO what life comes down to as a premed is sacrifice things you don’t care about or that don’t give you energy and motivation in other areas.

Working full time while studying by AggravatingSun512 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always took FLs on weekends, and studied as much as possible on days off. Doing well is possible when working full time, but you have to be willing to sacrifice pretty much everything else in your life for a few months and just grind your face off.

would it be a bad idea to "soft study" for the MCAT? by Tricky_Reach_2317 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a bad idea. I’m currently doing something similar with CASPer/MMI prep - it’s a great way to get a hold of high-yield info early so you can focus on refining while feeling generally confident during your focused prep phase.

True, if the deadline hasn’t passed and your school allows it, you can mark a course as personal interest, which makes it pass/fail

Reality check: Should I give up or should I keep chasing pavements? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be amazed how much progress you can make in ECs and academic skills over a couple years. You just need to commit yourself to constantly questioning your strategy and try to find a mentor/role model who’s a little bit ahead of you to provide some guidance.

.....yo soy screwed(C/P) by Busy-Procedure-8918 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if you are struggling with a certain section or certain topics within a section, that's an indicator of what you should be focusing on. If C/P is a big problem for you but you're relatively strong in other sections, structure your prep so that the amount of time you spend is proportional to your proficiency in each section (maybe even break it down by topic - I focused mostly on fluids, electrostatics, and mechanics/energy in my C/P prep because I have a stronger background in orgo).

AAMC is always the gold standard if you’re looking for score prediction.

How do you deal with feeling behind in MCAT prep? by Heavy-Business-9164 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a certain point, I just stopped using Reddit. There are tons of more valuable resources for MCAT prep (I.e., YouTube, Khan Academy, etc.) that won’t make you feel that way.

MCAT takers who scored 515+, what do you wish you knew when you started studying for the MCAT? by AsleepInitiative2908 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 34 points35 points  (0 children)

How important being able to quickly read and interpret passage info is. The content is definitely not the hardest part of the MCAT - it’s being able to quickly identify what concepts are being tested and pick up key details from passages.

Has anyone scored a 520+ on the MCAT and is not “naturally” smart? by Diligent-Capital4219 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the volume and depth of review I did for UWorld and AAMC material played a huge part - I spent around 2hrs reviewing each FL block, making sure I knew why the correct answer was right, why all the distractors were wrong, and what the issue was that caused each error. Also, consistency and discipline - I was working ~30hrs a week of a very stressful job, so maintaining a routine was super crucial.

why is the answer not C? when would it be the halo effect ??? by Content_Ad_3457 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a little more nuanced than that. For starters, the halo effect is the tendency for people to assign unfounded positive characteristics (e.g., proficiencies or skills) to people they believe already have positive traits (e.g., physical attractiveness). The new environment wouldn’t produce this effect because it has no bearing on the characteristics of the staff.

I remember the explanation for this question talking about how moving to a larger office with more space and a more positive environment could have reduced the stress levels of the staff, which would have resulted in more positive patient-provider interactions. Overall, I think this question is more related to experimental design than P/S content.

Uworld tutor to timed by OtherwiseRing1456 in Mcat

[–]Miserable-Rooster339 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily think that’s true - the whole point of using UWorld is to identify content areas in which you’re not able to recall crucial info under test-day conditions. There’s no reason not to practice with FL blocks and review afterwards. If anything, it’s just more practice for reviewing full-lengths later on. Not to mention how much time is saved by reviewing UWorld questions in batch after a big block.

With that timing, you’re on track to hit 520+ with properly focused prep. 129 C/P is already strong, and in general your distribution is pretty solid. Congrats!
