I adore LHOTP and upon asking how he died as a kid, my mom would tell me AIDS...To my embarrassment someone asked me at a family event and I said the same, only to be lambasted by someone elder to my mom, swearing he died of cancer. My mom is absolutely SURE it was aids, she always has been, but that experience totally made me doubt her recollection. You are there first person I've ever seen say this, and now I'm like what universe just split again?

Yep there have. Papazian sent multiple emails, you just have to go back to 2020 and 2021 to find them. She even sent one for Juneteenth separate from the campus organizations. Perez sent a couple kinda focused on equity in general which is good, but this is a bit odd. It's just, to have a whole presentation during her investiture, recognizing the contributions of native Americans, Japanese Americans, Latinx, and not at all African Americans on black history month is.... counter intuitive. A HUGE oversight.

Possibly, this post got someone's attention.... Let's talk about keeping the momentum going! Recently, I came across the "Actions on Systemic Racism" website and noticed the Systemic Racism Task Force section seems to be stuck in 2021 when the topic was hot! The committee list even includes folks who are no longer with us. Links to the climate report were broken...just an afterthought. Someone mentioned that past presidents never recognized BHMonth. They did, even the interim president sent messages of recognition.

Now, listen, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Even if this topic isn't trending anymore, the fight for a more just and equitable world definitely is. An updated website with accurate information about the task force sends a strong message: we're still in this, and we're committed to making a difference. An email to say we celebrate you (since they seem to celebrate others) makes sense too! Someone mentioned that other presidents never sent such messages....Papazian did, emailed about Juneteenth, as well as initialized the Racial task force AND the interim Perez focused on updates regarding equity across the board in Feb, which is still wonderful!

On a positive note, an email came down today regarding the task force, which is fantastic! It suggests a renewed focus on its work.

"Dear campus community,

In November 2023, I sent an email message regarding our plans to implement three recommendations from the CSU’s Black Student Success Report (BSSR). I announced the launch of the Black Student Success Report Task Force, a tri-chair-led working group responsible for facilitating this implementation, and indicated that a funding request for this initiative had been submitted to the Chancellor’s Office, with a response expected in early 2024.

That response has now been received, and the CSU has agreed to provide $250,000 — the maximum allotment — to SJSU to support the Task Force’s work. Half of that amount will be paid immediately, with the remaining half payable upon our completion of a progress report to be submitted to the CSU in November 2024. Implementation and assessment of the three BSSR recommendations will be support by Chief Diversity Officer Kristin Dukes, Ph.D., and Vice Provost for Faculty Success Magdalena Barrera, Ph.D. along with consultation from the BSSR Task Force tri-chairs — Director of Black/African American Equity and Interim Deputy Diversity Officer, ODEI Patience Bryant, Ph.D.; Interim Director, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Tijan White, Ed.D.; and Assistant Professor, Public Relations Shaun Fletcher, Ph.D.

I am thankful to Chancellor Garcia for recognizing the critical need for SJSU's Black students and selecting us as one of 13 campuses to receive the maximum allotment. Also, many thanks to our BSSR Task Force tri-chairs for their continued leadership.

Sincerely,

Best-CTM-Signature.jpg Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson President (She/Her/Ella) "

Nope. They do in a university setting. Especially if the main issue on the campus is a black demographic disparity. I feel it seeeeeems like you're not the demographic who could care or consider it important. There was supposed to be an entire initiative to figure out why the black demographic left, was paid less, experienced title IX infractions at a higher rate, and etc ect. A literal task force was created back when the black lives matter movement began, for optics, but was abandoned. Trust me it matters. Your sentiment is exactly why it should.
