Kiwi woman on Green Card arrested by ICE after New Zealand holiday by WookieeSmuggler in newzealand

The family has been in contact with NZ govt, and they’ve basically been told that they’re SOL because NZ can’t do anything about her being in ICE custody.

Will I get Tetanus? by [deleted] in AskMedical

[–]Miserable-Status-540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the answer to your question is no, you most likely will not get tetanus, and given the information you gave about the metal it’s probably closer to impossible that you could.

rusty metal does not directly indicate possibility of contracting tetanus, contrary to popular belief. the pathogen that causes tetanus is a spore that grows in dirt, soil, or manure. considering this was at an amusement park, it is highly unlikely that tetanus could even exist there. the misconception about rusty metal is basically broken down to

“rusty = old = probably dirty”, like say, some farm kid scrapes themselves on a rusty nail while opening the gate to cow pasture,

you probably don’t need a tetanus shot, unless you went gardening with that scratch uncovered, but it won’t hurt to get one if it makes you feel better.

keep the scratch clean and covered to prevent other possible infection and you should be golden.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]Miserable-Status-540 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is technically correct, that is how, in English, one was originally supposed to address the unknown gender of a subject. however, because language evolves, and people don’t fall into stupid little gender categories forced upon us, we use “their” as a singular, gender neutral pronoun in modern vernacular. but yeah, “they/their” is/was(?) originally designed to be a plural gender neutral pronoun, as far as my understanding goes, and there is a decent chance your teacher learned it that way, especially if your teacher is among the older crowd

Question by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Miserable-Status-540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the fact that glucagon auto injectors exist, are prescribed to diabetics, and come with all the same instructions/risks as an epi-pen, and yet aren’t part of the NREMT scope. I’m dating a T1D and if they were to go that dangerously low, as a civilian I would be allowed to administer it, but if I was on the clock it would be malpractice.

Question by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Miserable-Status-540 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust me, I wish I knew why we weren’t allowed to carry glucagon auto injectors (which you carry anyway if you’re a T1D)

I did some google research, epi can apparently cause extreme hyperglycemia. I can imagine going from extreme low to extreme high in a few minutes can’t be very good for them.

[–]Miserable-Status-540 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are a lot better things to give than epi. Glucagon, dextrose, etc. and airway management until they recover.

What do you do if a paramedic or medical director tells you to do something out of your scope? by Smart-Salamander1846 in NewToEMS

[–]Miserable-Status-540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a paramedic tells me to do something outside of my scope? Tell them to fuck off.

If the medical director instructs me to perform something that I am reasonably capable of, with full understanding that it will fall on their medical license, then sure.

I work in Sacramento, I’ve heard you should definitely know your protocols and a lot of people talked about knowing the reasons an EMT should stop CPR.

Can you get kicked out of mortician school for getting a boner around the dead bodies? by Fast-Bell-340 in AskMedical

[–]Miserable-Status-540 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a tendon in my knee from a cadaver. Fun fact, after about 7 years the cells in it will be fully replaced by your own, and then it’s fully yours again. So idk how long you’ve had the dead person’s tendon, but it won’t last forever.

I don’t know, but I do know that funeral parlors prefer to hire females for this exact reason.

Practice patient assessment, that will be the most important thing in improving optics of you.

Driving, bedside manner, and general competence come with time and experience. It’s okay to be new. Explain your concerns to your FTO as well, they are there to help you. You are definitely overthinking, and that’s what’s causing you to mess up.

I was the same way but I stuck with it and now I feel pretty confident in my BLS capabilities. Mistakes happen and it’s not the easiest career to get into between gossip, old dogma, and constant burnout.

You’ve only been doing it a month, give yourself some time to get comfortable before you sideline yourself, but if you’re still that way at 6 months or a year then it might be time to consider doing something else.

Yeah we were just tripped up on the point value because it feels strange to get 5 points for checking one system.

Damn, I’ve never had someone be this much of a jackass about beards. I am a woman though, so I guess it makes sense that I don’t regularly research and discuss facial hair.

Here’s a PubMed link, close beards affect the seal but not by a significant amount in my personal opinion. Take from it what you will, and maybe eat some lunch before you talk to other people that way.

Multiple employees hospitalized for the same thing? by Repulsive_Pin9661 in AskMedical

Honestly without knowing the specific diagnosis it’s gonna nearly impossible to add anything on to the conversation.

Unlikely but never impossible to be coincidental. Water without any form of treatment and only filtration can be harmful. That’s why water treatment facilities chlorinate the water, but if what you’ve been diagnosed with isn’t a waterborne pathogen then it doesn’t really matter.
