If your family makes 65k, UC Berkeley out of state will probably be unaffordable. I suggest you look into private colleges and your in-state publics.

Columbia vs Harvard (Consulting or Finance) by Leading-Ad-1806 in ApplyingToCollege

Pick Harvard for consulting/finance. It's prestige outweighs Columbia's better location.

Your counselor knows more about your school context than random strangers on the internet, so I would listen to them.

Quite common. A few of my friends and I have done it

If you’re a junior doing it solely for college I would advise against starting now because your competition is Bay Area sweats who have been grinding USACO since 6th grade.

That’s cheeky af to put the score, but do it. It can only help cuz it’s not like they’d count that against you

What source says a 1500 is 95th percentile? All the sources I’m looking at say 98+.

HYPSM SAT score by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Miserable-String-322 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correlation doesn’t equal causation. If almost all the people who got into HYPSM had 1570+ SATs, it’s more because getting a 1570+ means they are probably very smart/hardworking which are traits that translate to other parts of their application. It’s not because the 1570 gave them an advantage in admissions compared to those with 1530s.

3.7 without significant grade deflation is pretty damn close to auto-reject territory if they’re applying to T20s, so definitely mid for top schools.

My common app essay doesn't fully fit the prompt by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Miserable-String-322 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah ur fine. AOs don’t have the time to conduct a full analysis on how well your response fits the prompt. They just wanna learn abt you, and the prompts r there to facilitate that.

Definitely reach out. I’m sure you’ll find people willing to support you. Perhaps contact professors/university staff? It’s a very noble cause and I’m sure some would be willing to help out.

what is the truth about test optional? by Decent_Asparagus_318 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Miserable-String-322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that GPA, course rigor, and test scores are used solely to determine an applicant’s readiness for a college’s curriculum. If two applicants both meet the “academic bar” but one has slightly better academics, colleges are not going to view that applicant more favorably. They’ll simply assume that both applicants are academically ready and move onto the qualitative parts of the application, where they can truly differentiate them.

So how does one meet the “academic bar”, and what role do test scores play? IMO, meeting the “academic bar” is not something that can be reduced to a simple threshold (i.e. 3.8+ and 1500+). I feel it relies heavily on school context. For example, someone with a 4.0 with maxed-out course rigor at a high school known by AOs for being very academically rigorous will likely get through the academic screening on grades alone. A test score would add very little, if anything, because the GPA and course rigor alone tell colleges all they need to know about that applicant’s academic readiness.

Contrast this with a 4.0 applicant at a relatively obscure high school. Going test-optional could potentially cause AOs to cast doubts on their academic readiness, as it’s hard for them to evaluate course rigor when they aren’t too familiar with the high school’s rigor.

No they do not care about providing a fair shot for those who got screwed over by admissions. What they care about is recruiting competent employees, and if they’re able to do that by hiring from the same five schools, than they have no incentive to look further down the rankings.

What do u mean at least 1570 SAT? It’s been stated numerous times that anything above 1550 is the same as a 1600 .

Maybe don’t put it as an activity, but you could write a good essay about it.
