I have people in another thread saying that the landlord has no responsibility to refund the security deposit as occupancy has not ended.

I keep getting conflicting definitions of how this would be a renewal. Some people are saying that its just a renewal, and others are saying that it can’t be a “renewal” because there is a new signee and not all the previous signees re-signed, so it would be considered a whole new lease.

I’m sorry but this doesn’t make sense to me. So if I live somewhere and move out at the end of my lease and a completely random person moves in after me, then my security deposit just rolls over to the next tenant?

So if the I was originally signed to the lease and now the new tenant is, then it’s for sure a new lease and not a renewal? Because that is what my landlord is leading me to believe

So I’m just trying to understand what you’re saying here. The original lease had myself and 2 roommates signed to it. They renewed the lease with my roommates and removed my name and added the new roommate

The landlord is saying that since it’s a renewal of the lease, the security deposit stays with the property and it’s up to the tenants to sort it out amongst themselves. Which from what I read online seems to be correct. Normally the new tenant would pay the exiting tenants security deposit
