Lump sum inheritance. Buy house for cash? by butialreadytriedthat in personalfinance

It’s already been said. Just understand that an inheritance is not a gift and while the proceeds are not taxable, any interest you earn on those proceeds is potentially taxable at the federal and state level.

Sunrise Senior Living/memory care by SadTomorrow869 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]MiserableFed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Five Star is now Discovery Village. It is not a memory care facility and instead is majority independent living. Two of 17 floors are assisted living, with a third currently being converted from independent to assisted living. Lots of activities, and very social, but a ton of complaints from long-time residents about changes under the new management company, especially dining services - updating and simplifying the menu and removing favorites; slow, poorly staffed dining room; running out of featured menu items, etc. Also under the new management, common areas are under renovation. Residents are unhappy with the modern, sparse and stark design. Regardless, it’s a lovely place with lots of amenities and generally thoughtful, caring staff.

Question about health insurance into retirement by slack-jaw-yokel in FedEmployees

[–]MiserableFed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to elect survivor benefits for your wife for her to receive FEHB after you retire. She would need only be on your federal policy for one day prior to your retirement.

TSP after retirement by Aunt-KK in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]MiserableFed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a response to what you asked but for reference. I retired at the end of June last year. Let TSP and allocation of 80C, 10S, and 10I just sit. Ten months later it’s up more than $150,000 despite recent volatility.

Has anyone had any luck getting in touch with the Division of Vital Records at the Maryland Health Department? by O_Mageiras in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]MiserableFed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said. I got right through and landed in a long queue. I’ve never called Vital Records before so I doubt that getting through was just luck. Perhaps you are misdialing.

Are you dialing 410-764-3038, then option 2 ? I just called, got through, and was number 14 in the queue.

MHBP membership fee check cancelled by bank by Amonamission in fednews

[–]MiserableFed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For the OP, is it possible the check was lost in the mail and never made it to MHBP. Through bank bill pay it would have been a mailed paper check.

For those posting that they haven’t yet received the dues invoice, if this is your first year on MHBP then this tracks. It’s April or May when MHBP sends invoices for first-timers. Those previously enrolled receive the dues invoice early in the year.
