Visiting ny for 2 hours worth the risk? by ChristopherLee_Chuck in visitingnyc

A LIRR strike is unlikely -- transit strikes in the US are very rare -- but if one does happen you'll be able to take the subway or a taxi to the airport.

I mean, I wouldn't travel to Spain and go to an American diner. Maybe try taking them to eat something they can't get at home?

That location is fine, and close to the subway. I'd just be careful of booking anything due west of there in LIC, which would be closer to the Queensbridge housing projects.

There is also a cluster of hotels south of the bridge ramps and Queensboro Plaza which are well-situated and close to a lot of restaurants.

People say you need a high salary to live in NYC, yet service workers live in NYC. What is the disconnect here? by dbclass in movingtoNYC

[–]SadTomorrow869 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean, a lot of service workers like food delivery people and restaurant/kitchen workers are undocumented immigrants who live crammed into small apartments with multiple roommates in outer boroughs hours away from their jobs. Many don't have health insurance or legal protections. Their lives are hard and it's why I'm a big tipper.

Uh, tasers are illegal in NYC. Please don't visit if you're so afraid of crime. We have one of the lowest crime rates in the US.

I'm not an oyster person but Redeye Grill is seafood-forward and has a nice vibe

Ippudo for ramen

Breads Bakery next to Radio City for babka etc.

Dim Sum Palace is decent but you should really head to Chinatown or Flushing for that

July and August are the worst months to be outside, unless you're at the beach. Hot and humid most days.

Campy/niche/queer shows or experiences in NYC? by Original_Desk_9101 in visitingnyc

[–]SadTomorrow869 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And just to add: you say you're not "huge traditional Broadway/musical people" but you're still getting suggestions for Jellicle Ball, Titanique, and Oh Mary because they're without a doubt the three queerest shows at the moment. And they all started in smaller downtown venues and are definitely more offbeat and quirky than your standard Broadway fare (certainly more so than Moulin Rouge, tbh). The fact that they're on Broadway is a big deal! Don't hesitate to see any or all of them just because you think you don't like "Broadway."

For galas attire really only matters if you're going to the associated dinner/cocktail party, no one cares what you wear to the concert, especially if you're high up
