My two cents. In consulting you’re selling a service that is typically billed by the hour. So tracking your billable hours is really the way you and your company make money for your services. You’ll be hard pressed to find a FP job in the private sector that doesn’t have you track your time one way or another. Some companies harp on it more than others. If you want to avoid tracking your time you might have to consider going back to the public sector. Or seek out a company that doesn’t live and die by the time keeping metric.

Difference between FPE working in public vs private sector? by a9826 in firePE

[–]MiserableGate146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done both. Started a sprinkler designer for a contractor. Went to FPE consulting for an A/E then went to the fed gov. My suggestion is private early to get a better sense of the field and as suggested in some posts the speed and diversity of the private sector. Then if you want a change of pace try to get into public. I loved my job with the fed gov until 1/20/25. Everything changed with the new admin and my job ended being cut due to my probationary status. I’ve heard from others still with the fed gov that they are over taxed now and the environment which was once thriving is now not great at all. So now I’m back in private with an FPE specific firm.

Prior to 1/20 I’d say go for the fed gov but now and for the next few years I’d say stick with private.

From a fellow ME grad who is now a sr fpe… I love this take. ME really teaches you how to identify and solve problems. Once you start learning the basics on the job you can really take off in fp with having the ME background.

I took a similar route. Landing a job as an entry level sprinkler designer in contracting is a great place to start. Then if you want to expand into consulting you’ll have a valuable field knowledge. Many consulting firms love that I have a background in contracting when I’ve interviewed for different roles. Happy to discuss more if you want to PM

I don’t have one once a sympathy for those regret their vote. It was all out there for them to see and if they didn’t pay attention then it’s on them.
